EXCERPT:

“What do you think, Trip?” Holly Drake asked. She glanced at the pilot of the ship the SC Olavia Apollo. The female was a Centau, which Holly would have never imagined using in her life. However, tech genius crew-member Darius had sworn that she wouldn’t compromise the operation and turn over their illegal activities to the Centau leadership. Despite his scoundrel ways, Darius had proven himself enough that Holly trusted him. “Can you do it?”
The Centau turned to the stare at Holly, where she sat in the co-pilot seat, and smirked. “‘Think I can do it?’ What sort of question do you ask me, Drake?”
“A nervous question. I hate space-flight.”
“Yes. So you’ve said. Repeatedly.” Trip’s dark gaze flickered over Holly’s face, then went back to the monitor.
Charly was already suited up in the air-lock and waiting, while Odeon was strapped in behind Holly, humming. This mission wasn’t the sort that lent itself to drinking for nerves. Was it a terrible thing to ask her Druiviin friend that he hum to help her through the ordeal?
Probably. But there weren’t a lot of options at the moment.
“You needn’t worry the least. Centau ships are the most advanced in the known galaxies. He’s mapping the gravity of this misshapen moon as we approach for landing. It won’t even be rough. And I will have very little to do with the actual landing. It is in the hands of the Olavia Apollo’s AI.” Trip gestured at the video image of the moon on the monitor as they approached.
It was a small one, indeed. Around seven and a half miles at its longest and as lumpy as a potato-tuber hybrid. Darkness and unfiltered sunlight gave the moon’s surface relief, revealing its pockmarks, scars, and vast gouges. There were several transponders attached to the surface. These transponders were what had brought Holly and her team to the small moon in the first place.
Holly held her breath as their ship, in some mysterious advanced physics and engineering, slowed upon nearing the touchdown. A low noise began suddenly, whining through the background sounds of the ship’s systems. Holly looked around, panic rising as the danger seemed to grow.
“What is that?” she whispered, clutching the hard cushion of the edge of her seat.
A calming violet hand appeared on her shoulder. She could see it in her peripheral vision.
“It is you, Holly Drake,” Odeon said. There was a song in his voice, and a slight tone of humor. “Peace. You are nervous. All will be fine.”
Trip’s gaze was also on Holly.
“Shouldn’t you be watching this landing?” There was a definite edge in Holly’s tone. No peace at all.
“The AI. If I interfere, I could ruin the landing. Olavia Apollo has it.” Trip nodded at the sleek control board. “Don’t worry.”
The first time they’d ridden with Trip, Holly had expected wood, brass, and a large steering wheel—like the space zeppelins. Not at all what she found. Instead the small space cruiser was something right out of the future. Trip barely even piloted it.
That didn’t stop the Centau from wearing a white jumpsuit with patches on the upper arms and a pair of goggles with amber tinted lenses. Right now the eye-pieces were on top of Trip’s ivory stubble-covered head as she watched the surface of the moon float toward their ship on the video image on the screen.
“What is it you want to do with the transponders?” Trip asked. She watched the video footage onscreen as they moved closer to the surface.
A knot tightened in Holly’s gut. Her stomach stretched taut. Her shoulders arched back against her seat slightly. Odeon’s hand burned through her jacket, seeming to heat up as the tension tore through her body. She wasn’t sure what she feared—crashing too hard into the unforgiving surface of the moon or their ship ripping apart and sending them all careening into the void of space, like flecks of ice off one of the un-terraformed ice moons of Ixion. The one they were about to land on was one of the few asteroid-like moons, and therefore peppered with transponders on all sides, repeating audio and video signal through the 6-moon system.
If Odeon’s hand hadn’t been there, if Odeon’s low song hadn’t been worming its way into her ears, digging deep into her brain, pirouetting across her neurons like an ancient earth-ballet dancer, soothing her like a pied-piper of lore, Holly knew that she would have been nothing more than a puddle of adrenalin, dispersed through the low-G-interior of the ship, floating around like rain drops.
She did not like space-flight.
The ship balanced, thrusters fired, a harpoon-like anchor ejected and tethered their ship to the rock and they connected with the moon in a light thud, touching down.

Hurting and still recovering from a whirlwind affair with a man who reveals an unforgivable secret, Hope flees Chicago for London, England. There, she tries to pull herself together and decide what, if anything, of her old life is worth fighting for.
They say you can’t have it all, and the events of the last few months seem to be trying to prove that. Hope’s not ready to give up, however. After all, where is it written that a woman must choose between passionate love and an exciting career?
A story about beating the odds, Pink Slips is the first installment in Emma J. Wolfe’s Hope Hunter Chronicles.

EXCERPT:

The next morning, she awoke with an odd feeling of vigor and excitement. Somehow the turn of events made her happy. How that could be, she was not sure, but she felt inspired—hopeful—in a way she had not for so long. Finally, she would be free of David; he would no longer abuse her emotionally. Her future was ahead of her. Her marriage was over…but so was a caging relationship that kept her from real happiness. Being alone would be better than being with him. She was about to launch one of the most successful new companies focused on the new condition of a contemporary woman. She would bring a voice to so many. She wore her favorite blue Armani suit that day with beautiful nude pumps and a matching Valentino handbag. She piled on as much eye serum as she could to hide the evidence of the tears and shame from the night before. She wasn’t sure if she should go home first or not, but she decided not was a better answer. She threw all her things in the trunk of her car, unsure where she would spend the night but certain today would bring something new and better. I have my courage and conviction. I have me, Hope, she thought. No pun intended.
Today, she thought, would change everything.

SYNOPSIS

What if you could ask for anything- and get it?

In the sandy Mojave Desert, Madison is a small town on the road between nothing and nowhere. But Eldon wouldn’t want to live anywhere else, because in Madison, everyone gets one wish—and that wish always comes true.
Some people wish for money, some people wish for love, but Eldon has seen how wishes have broken the people around him. And with the lives of his family and friends in chaos, he’s left with more questions than answers. Can he make their lives better? How can he be happy if the people around him aren’t? And what hope is there for any of them if happiness isn’t an achievable dream? Doubts build, leading Eldon to a more outlandish and scary thought: maybe you can’t wish for happiness…maybe, just maybe, you have to make it for yourself.

(Blood Of The Custodians, #2)
Published by: Changing Tides Publishing
Publication date: May 28th 2018
Genres: Adult, Paranormal, Romance

He’ll risk his heart to save her soul.
As the war between the Fates and the resistance rages on, Colin Murphy—bastard son of Hades—finds himself caught between his loyalty to Eros and a past that threatens to destroy him.
Pursued by Persephone’s bounty hunters, and with a pissed-off daemon to contend with, there is one thing that Murphy knows for sure – Hailey, the human he now shares his mind and body with, is innocent in all of it. She is a firefly flickering in the darkness of his black existence, and he will do anything and everything to protect her.
Hailey was groomed to be a socialite, with her entire future mapped out for her. Nothing could have prepared her for the abrupt ending to that life—or the impact of living in such close, intimate confines with a forsaken son of Hell. He’s powerful, he’s dangerous…and he’s her only hope of escaping the dark forces that pursue her.
Boundaries will be tested, loyalties questioned, and hearts pushed to the limits in this action-packed paranormal romance that continues the epic Blood of the Custodians saga by Sharonlee Holder.
This steamy, fast-paced paranormal romance series by Sharonlee Holder is perfect for fans of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J.R. Ward and Sacrificed to the Dragon by Jessie Donovan.

EXCERPT:

Murphy didn’t bother with the door. He came straight through the hearth, travelling through the fiery elements of his heritage. Mayhem was close. Writhing beneath the surface, tearing at the restraints, howling to be set free.
Clamping down on his base self, he swept the small front room of his mind, a red haze gathered behind his eyes and found …
You’re making a mess,” said the toffee-eyed temptress with hands on her curvy hips and chin jutted at the coals littering the stone flooring.
Murphy glanced down and began to toe aside embers. Wait a fecking minute! This was his house–so to speak.
Growling, he took a step forward. “Where is she?
Hailey–goddamn her–stood her ground, threw her shoulders back, maximising the swell of luscious breasts, and arched a slender eyebrow. “I’m not sure how things work where you come from, but where I come from, you catch more bees with honey,” she stated with all the hauteur of a tiny hive queen.
No. Not gonna happen. She’d tricked him once, and that was shame on her. He wasn’t about to give her another opportunity to force the fool’s hat onto his head. For all he knew, she was working with Valazhor. Come to think of it …
What did she offer you?” he asked.
Candy apple lips parted then snapped shut again, a believable impression of affront arranged across her features. “Excuse me?
She wanted to play it the hard way, did she?
Dainty hands dropped from her hips and tucked into the crooks of her arms when she crossed them under her breasts. Carnal desire hijacked the moment and served up a confused reminder of plush curves undulating against him, open-mouthed kisses along his neck…
You heard me,” he growled, cursing the throaty throb in his voice. “What was to be your reward for distracting me so that the Medusan hybrid could get close enough to deliver Persephone’s message?
Anger ignited in her eyes, flaming cognac over toffee, the scent of burnt caramel licking the air. “I don’t appreciate what you’re implying.”
Anger he could do. Anger was safer. Way safer than the alternative.
Closing the gap, Murphy crowded in, using his size to dominate. Again, she refused to back down and craned her head all the way back, daggers in her eyes. Dynamite, as the saying goes, comes in small packages. The masochist in him toyed with the ignition switch.
Lowering his head, he said in her ear, “I’m only going to ask one more time so think carefully before you answer.” This close, her scent was richer, more exotic. Harder to ignore. “What was the deal Valazhor made with you?
She didn’t move, though her breathing became shallower. “Or what?” Hailey murmured. “You’ll lock me in my room?” She turned her head toward him, her lips millimetres from his, candy scent invading his nostrils.
His mouth watered, and the base of his spine knotted with need. It took greater effort than he wanted to admit to make his brainbox line up the threat he had ready. “Or, I’ll save myself a whole lot of fecking trouble and give you to Persephone myself.
Thick black lashes, swept upward, revealed the brandy fire in her eyes. Her aura in life had read as human. Nothing about her had suggested hybrid, much less witch. Even the background check Ross had him run before allowing her to visit the penthouse revealed little more than a classic case of daddy’s pampered princess. And yet, her eyes burned with a soul fire that intrigued and disturbed him, agitating something deep inside of him.
What are you waiting for?” she challenged in a whisper. “Do it. Hand me over.
Caught in the blaze of her eyes, everything else ceased to exist. In the lull, that thing she had disturbed, rose up. Intensely territorial, fiercely possessive, spiked with a craving so intense… he acted before thought could catch deed.

SYNOPSIS

In the world of Edenarth, faerie technology has advanced the realms immeasurably. Crystal ball communications, magic mirror displays, and portals for fast travels are just some of the things that faeries have engineered to allow for human consumption – at the right price, of course. Politically, countless kingdoms and realms vie for power and prestige. It is a world filled with mysterious mermaids, fearsome ogres and trolls, clueless humans, terrifying dragons, syndicates and pirates, faeries and magic.
In the realm of Kelemer, Adella lives a life of peasantry with her parents, always hiding from a shadow no one will name. One night, she is visited by a grandmother whom she never knew existed: Queen Cassandra Everheart, ruler of the kingdom of Adamaris, the neighboring ocean realm to the south. After years of hiding, Adella learns why her family has been hunted as Cassandra apologizes for banishing Adella’s father for marrying outside of the royal blood line. Adamaris has since been bereft of an heir, and with Adella being the rightful crown princess, she is presented with the choice to leave and attend Royal High, a finishing academy for royals.
Naturally, Adella is stunned, but reluctantly agrees, and soon finds herself in the halls of Royal High along side other young royals from across the realms. But a strange darkness haunts Adella in the shadows of the school, and through a series of increasingly threatening events, Adella finds that not everyone is as they appear in the world of royals. For under the surface of all kingdoms, a terrible and dark force is rising. An ancient race of dragons, once thought vanquished by five guardians of light, are fighting to break free from their thousand year exile.
Can Adella understand what her dreams are telling her before it is too late? Or will the darkness consume everything she loves?

EXCERPT

Chapter 3—MIN

“I don’t want to be in charge of anything.” I’d scooted back on the couch as if to force a path through the trailer wall. “And you’re talking crazy. No one will listen to me.” I fought to keep my voice firm. “I’m the girl who got shot in the back, remember?”

His shoulders fell. “Min, that was—“Our classmates are all idiots, anyway,” I said. I was in a funk, and knew it, but Tack had blindsided me with this save-the-world crap. “If they had the sense to realize we have to unite against Ethan, they’d have done it already.”

“We have to at least try.” He was trying to sound confident. Suddenly, I felt ashamed.

Tack captured my gaze and held it. “You’re a beta. But more than that, you’re the type who should be running things. You care about fairness, and justice, all that noble crap. People know that.” He sighed. “Without a new rallying point, Ethan and Sarah are the only game in town. People flock to strength when they’re scared, even when it’s wrong. If we want an alliance against them, someone is going to have to step up.”

I took a deep breath. “For the sake of argument . . . what do you suggest?”

He brightened immediately, flourishing his laser pointer and aiming it at the G.I. Joe. “We visit the cousins. They’re close by, clearly opposed to Ethan, and know how to take care of themselves. Plus, it must be awful up in that dirty miners’ compound. Maybe we can persuade them to come down here and join us.”

I suppressed a sigh. “Don’t get your hopes up. Sam and Carl are survivalists. They wouldn’t have chosen that spot if they didn’t think they could last a long time. And I still don’t see what we’re bringing to the table”

Tack rose and slipped his hoodie on. “That’s not ‘victory pizza’ talk, but I’ll let it slide.” He took two steps toward the door, then stopped and looked back at me. “We good?”

I stuck my tongue out at him, but nodded. Honestly, I did feel a little better having made a decision. “Go get that pizza, soldier. We’ll need our strength for the hike.”

Tack scratched his cheek. “When do you want to head out?”

“After lunch. A few hours should give us plenty of time to perfect the art of diplomacy.”

Tack snorted, stepped outside. My spirits sank as soon as the door eased shut.

My joke had hidden the truth—I had no idea what to say to my classmates. I’d never been a leader and everyone knew it, whatever Tack might believe.

How was Melinda Wilder supposed to unify a resistance? What did I have to offer anyone?

"Debut author Geiger's social-media-saturated thriller (which fittingly got its start on Wattpad) should transfix teens for whom online relationships (romantic and otherwise) are integral parts of daily life, and catfishing and hacking are genuine fears. Tweets, direct messages, and police interrogation transcripts are incorporated throughout, throwing the reliability of both narrators into question and hinting at the sinister thread underlying this boy-meets-girl story. " ―Publishers Weekly

"Pieces are revealed one at a time until they all come together at the end-right before everything falls apart before a final, dark twist. A page-turner for young adults invested in social media, fandoms, and mysteries." ―School Library Journal

"Told though alternating points of view, tweets, and police reports, this novel is perfect for fans of Sara Shepard, April Henry, or Kimberly Derting. In her debut novel, Geiger creates a rich horror story which is all the more intriguing because of its conceivable possibilities. Using fan culture and social media communications to the best effect, she makes the setting and plot convincingly real." ―VOYA Magazine

EXCERPT:

“I …” Tasia paused, choosing her words with care this time. “My work with your Pack …” “Fuck the Pack.” His voice was very even. “This has nothing to do with the Pack. I’m talking
about us — you and me.”
“No.” She shook her head, wishing the noise in her head would abate and allow her to think
more clearly. “There’s no us.”
An eyebrow arched up in the near darkness. “So, that kiss in the cave …”
Tasia interrupted him. “I didn’t kiss you.”
He shot her a look.
“You kissed me” she insisted, responding to that look. “Both times.”
“No” he said unequivocally. “We’ve both been willing partners in this dance. I lead, but you’ve
been with me every step of the way.”
They stared at each other, the air between them charged with an awareness that they stood on
the edge of a precipice. She couldn’t discern his expression but she wondered what he read in hers, with his night eyes.
“Any time you’d like a demonstration, let me know” he remarked sardonically.
Tasia flushed. They’d been leading up to this moment, she realized. This was the dance he talked about. She should have put a stop to it before. Now, she’d have to defuse it carefully or the resulting conflagration would destroy her.
“I’ve been around the block a few times, witchling. You and I — we make our own fire, no tinder required. That’s not it. Something else has you stepping back. What is it?”
Tasia thought furiously, through the fog in her head. “You don’t get involved with Pack” she reminded him.
“I’m willing to make an exception for you” he said clearly.
Tasia blinked, once. He wasn’t going to make this easy for her.
“I did tell you once that I’d ignore my principles for the right person.” It was his turn to remind
her.
Tasia, who remembered the occasion well, said nothing.
“Am I to continue with the Pack?” she asked.
“Yes.”
She hesitated. “What happens if things … uh … don’t work out between us?”
He laughed, a sound singularly devoid of amusement.
“You’ve walked away from the Pack before. I didn’t let that stop me from going after you,
when I thought you were in danger. What does that tell you, witchling?”
Tasia couldn’t refute him. There was nothing to say. He would not let his personal feelings get
in the way of his responsibilities to his Pack or to her, no matter how bad things got between them. Then, something seemed to strike him. “Is it because I’m a Shifter?”
Tasia wondered wildly if he would accept that. Perhaps his pride would not let him pursue her if he believed that she wanted no part of a relationship with a Shifter. It would make her sound like a bigot. But she’d take that.
“Will you let this be if … if I have reservations about Shifters?” she asked hopefully.
“Hell no.” His response was immediate and forceful. “I’ll do my damnedest to change your mind.”
He frowned, something about her answer registering finally. “Is that what this is about — being with a Shifter?”
Again, he was forthright with his query, and Tasia realized she could not bring herself to lie to him. Like him, she too was willing to make an exception. For him.
“No” she admitted softly.
There was a short silence while Tasia tried to get her jumbled thoughts into order. The wild cacophony in her head was now so loud that it drowned out everything but his voice, even the gentle lap of water against the wall and the whoosh of the wind behind her.
“Let me simplify this for you” he said, the gold eyes holding her gaze. “Tell me what you want, and we go from there.”
“What I want?” Tasia repeated mechanically.
I can’t have what I want.
“Don’t tell me you don’t know what you want.” His eyes narrowed in the darkness.
Tasia shook her head, her eyes darting away as if to seek an escape. She’d have to walk away, she thought despairingly. She saw no other way out.
His initial fury having abated, Raoul was starting to use his connection to her, much as he had before, when he’d been so attuned to her unspoken words. He had realized it almost immediately, taking it in stride. He wondered if she had picked up on it yet.
“You told me once that you don’t run away” he reminded her, picking up hints of her roiling emotions.
Tasia said nothing.
“If you run from me because you don’t want to deal with whatever is between us, witchling, I will come after you.” His voice hardened as a spike of anger flared in him. “I won’t stand by again while you run recklessly into the fire.”
Tasia looked away from him. There seemed no way out of this impasse. He would not back away, not without an explanation from her. She could not give him one, not without endangering all sorts of secrets, and she was very much afraid that, unless she convinced him to walk away first, she’d eventually succumb to him.
Talk about jumping from the frying pan into the fire!
Raoul stared at her, puzzled by her inexplicable desire to deny that which sizzled like a living entity between them. He tried to piece together what he could sense from her.
Suddenly, it hit him. “You’re afraid!” he muttered incredulously.
This was the primary emotion he sensed from her, overriding everything else. He had sensed many emotions from her before but terror, the kind he sensed now, had thus far been reserved exclusively for the Clan.
She said nothing, neither confirming nor refuting his statement. Jolted, he took a step back. “Of what?”
Tasia stared at him mutely, her hesitation palpable.
“Of me?” he asked, his voice hoarse.

The Crowns of Croswald by D.E. Night Review!

The Crowns of Croswald (The Croswald Series)

Title: The Crowns of Croswald
Series: The Croswald Series #1
Author: D.E. Night
Pages: 314
Published: July 21st 2017 by Stories Untold Press

PURCHASE: Amaon.com / Amazon.co.uk / Book Depository

In Croswald, the only thing more powerful than dark magic is one secret…
For sixteen years Ivy Lovely has been hidden behind an enchanted boundary that separates the mundane from the magical. When Ivy crosses the border, her powers awaken. Curiosity leads her crashing through a series of adventures at the Halls of Ivy, a school where students learn to master their magical blood and the power of Croswald’s mysterious gems. When Ivy’s magic––and her life––is threatened by the Dark Queen, she scrambles to unearth her history and save Croswald before the truth is swept away forever.

My Thoughts:

Ivy Lovely knows nothing other than her duties as a scullery maid. For years, she has toiled away in the kitchens along side the Scaldron dragons, whom bake food in their mouths. When a smaller dragon gets sick, Ivy tries to hide the fact from Helga, the head of the kitchen. But things happen and both Ivy and the dragon are thrown out. Little does Ivy know that she was placed, there under a magical barrier, to protect her from the people who will do her harm. Once she passes the barrier, her powers awaken and Ivy is thrust into a world of magic and her life is about to change forever.

I read this with my son and I have to say, we both thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of it! The world building was magical! We have the Scrivenerists, these are the ones who have a photographic memory and record and draw everything they see. They are assigned to a royal family when they graduate and have to record their whole lives. Ivy is put into this category, which she loves because she loves to draw. Then we have the princesses who have the magic from their stones in their crowns. Different stones produce different magics. Then we have a fantastical array of magical creatures, from dragons to little creatures that produce light and are used in lanterns. I think both my son and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing all the magic and the creatures come to life with the authors descriptive writing. I could clearly see all that was unfolding and I so want this to become a movie!!

I also loved the characters. Each was well written and developed. Ivy was such a wonderful character and she was my sons favourite. She had a hard time growing up and its made her all the more lovable because of it. She is smart, brave, compassionate and loving. She is the perfect heroine for kids!! I would love to see more like her in the middle grade books.

In all, this was a great read. If you love Harry Potter, then you will love this because it evoked the same kind of feelings from me as I had when reading Harry Potter! It is a magical story filled with action, adventure, unique characters, unique magic and plenty of mischief from the characters. The author has created an amazing world and one I can't wait to dive into again. Highly recommend.

The Fairies of Sadieville by Alex Bledsoe Blog Tour and Giveaway!

Series: Tufa Novels (Book 6)
Hardcover: 368 pages
Publisher: Tor Books (April 10, 2018)

SYNOPSIS

Charming and lyrical, The Fairies of Sadieville continues Alex Bledsoe's widely-praised contemporary fantasy series, about the song-wielding fairy descendants living in modern-day Appalachia.
"This is real." Three small words on a film canister found by graduate students Justin and Veronica, who discover a long-lost silent movie from more than a century ago. The startlingly realistic footage shows a young girl transforming into a winged being. Looking for proof behind this claim, they travel to the rural foothills of Tennessee to find Sadieville, where it had been filmed.
Soon, their journey takes them to Needsville, whose residents are hesitant about their investigation, but Justin and Veronica are helped by Tucker Carding, who seems to have his own ulterior motives. When the two students unearth a secret long hidden, everyone in the Tufa community must answer the most important question of their entire lives -- what would they be willing to sacrifice in order to return to their fabled homeland of Tir na nOg?

Praise for ALEX BLEDSOE

“As always, Bledsoe infuses his setting with a rich sense of location, atmosphere, and history, underscored by folk music; the secret tragedies of the Tufa unfold over multiple eras before returning to the present....Bledsoe’s series continues to enthrall with complex and nuanced stories.” ―Publishers Weekly

"Imagine a book somewhere between American Gods and Faulkner. Absolutely worth your time." ―Patrick Rothfuss, New York Times bestselling author

Praise for the TUFA Books

“Long Black Curl makes me so happy that there are authors writing real North American-based mythic fiction...one that sits so well it feels like it's always been a part of us.” ―Charles de Lint

“Beautifully written, surprisingly moving, and unexpected in the best of ways.” ―Seanan McGuire, New York Times bestselling author, on Wisp of a Thing

“Haunting. . . . It's a mixture: folk tales and folk songs, updated with a dose of Sex and the City. Or, you might say, a rustic version of 'urban fantasy,' with its suggestion that there's mystery just around the corner, hidden behind even the dullest small-town facade.” ―The Wall Street Journal on The Hum and the Shiver

Excerpt:

“What do you think is in it?” Veronica asked. The humid spring night air blew through the curtains, drawn in by the fan that was all their combined student budget could afford. They didn’t really mind. She lay naked on her back, while Justin sat on the edge of the bed, also naked except for his guitar. He strummed a few chords, then noted them on his laptop.
She saw that he hadn’t heard. He could dive so deep into music that he lost track of everything around him.
She poked him and repeated, “What do you think is in it?”
Justin looked up. “What’s that, Detective Mills?”
“Don’t do it,” she mock-warned.
“Are you asking me—”
“No!”
“What’s in the baaax?” he finished, imitating Brad Pitt in Seven.
“You are awful,” she said, and they both laughed.
He put the guitar aside and stretched out beside her. “Whatever it is, we can’t just break it open. It might be private family stuff.”
“He didn’t have a family,” she protested. “We’re his family.”
“We’re his friends, watching out for his dignity.”
She scooted closer and draped one leg across him. “Come on,” she said teasingly, gently pressing her hips against him, “aren’t you the least bit curious?”
He pushed her onto her back. “I’m very curious.”
“So what do you think is in it?” she asked again, wrapping her legs around him.
“I don’t have a clue,” he said as he began to move more rhythmically.
“You worked with him every day,” she said breathlessly, meeting his movements with her own.
“Only for the past year,” he said, shifting his weight to free one hand to caress her breasts. “He’s been at the school for thirty years, and who knows how much stuff he might’ve…”
For a few urgent moments neither of them spoke. Then, after he rolled off, caught his breath, and kissed her deeply, he said, “We don’t even know how long that box has been there.”
“If the stack of magazines on top of it was any indication, quite a while,” Veronica said, tucking hair behind her sweaty ear. “Some of them went back fifty years.”
“Look, our job is just to organize and catalog it. It’s all the property of the school.”
“I know. It’s just that I hate mysteries.”
He chuckled. “You mean you love mysteries. You’re a freaking ghost hunter.”
“Parapsychologist.”
“Po-TAY-to, po-TAH-to. Either way, you eat mysteries for breakfast.”
She smiled and stretched with contentment. “I do indeed.”
