Peaceful Genocide by J.A. Reynolds Blog Tour and Review!

Title : Peaceful Genocide
Author : J.A. Reynolds
Publication date : November 25th 2013
Genres : Science Fiction, Thriller, Young Adult

Synopsis:

Seventeen-year-old Mitzi and Deuce can recall how many drops of water were on a leaf from a rainstorm five years ago and conversations from last week, month, or year. They have the ability to remember every second of everyday—since birth.

This gift has blessed Mitzi with a history of being sexually assaulted by researchers and abused by her own parents. She trusts no one. Likes no one. Deuce, however, is a high school standout. His gift has made him a superstar on the football field and his memory promises him endless opportunities.

When they both end up at an Alzheimer’s research facility under false proviso, they quickly realize this place isn’t what it seems to be. They endure crazy military-style tests, are forcefully drugged, and complete real-life simulations that haunt them.

Mitzi and Deuce have no idea what the researchers want to do with them or their memories. But one thing is clear: the researchers will go to any lengths to get what they want.

My Thoughts :

Mitzi finds herself on her way to Juvenile Detention, at least she thinks that's where she is headed!!  Its not till she gets there and is dropped from the taxi down a shoot, chased by crazy dogs and nearly attacked by something that she realises this isn't Juvie. She meets 3 other kids there and finds out she is in a Government facility that's supposedly  looking for a cure for Alzheimer’s.  See Mitzi, Deuce, Paisley and Ralph are special. They each can remember EVERYTHING they have ever done or seen since birth. Give them a date and they can tell you exactly what they were doing, wearing and eating.

This facility claims that over 8 weeks they will do tests and simulations on each of them to find out how their brains work. This will all be put into a computer and hopefully one day cure Alzheimer’s. As each test finishes Mitzi is getting more and more suspicious of whats really happening. The simulations feel real and nothing seems like it will help Alzheimer’s, it all feels too military. Whats happening? Why is Mitzi losing some of her memories? Is this really for a cure or something else?

Well this was nothing like I expected!! I honestly thought it would be very heavy on the sci fi but wow, this was so good.

I loved Mitzi. She is spunky, kick ass but a softy at heart. Her whole life she has been used and abused both mentally and physically. Her parents send her for test after test just so they can pocket the money. She was abused by her father and some of the scientists that were doing the tests and trusts no one. She shows a real tough exterior and never lets anyone in but I just wanted to pull her in and hug her! It isn't long before Mitzi questions what is happening but nobody will listen. She must take matters into her own hands and find out whats really going on.

Deuce on the other hand is a real jock. He uses his gift to make his life better. At first he sees Mitzi as a handful but slowly he sees past her exterior and both become friends. Deuce follows the rules to the letter but over time sees that what they are doing isn't what they should be doing!!

All the characters are well written and developed. The whole plot was so unexpected and intense. From the very start its a rollercoaster of action, suspense, intrigue and mystery. While reading it I couldn't see what was coming next, there were so many twists and turns. Peaceful Genocide was intense, unexpected and totally awesome. I was honestly blown away with some of the twists and have no problem recommending!!

The Headhunters Race by Kimberly Afe Book Blitz, Review and Giveaway!

Series: Headhunters #1
Release date: January 3rd 2014
Publisher: January Sky Publishing
Purchase: Amazon

BOOK DESCRIPTION:

Sixteen-year-old Avene was sentenced to prison at thirteen for a crime she didn't commit. Now she has a chance to win her freedom back – if she enters the Headhunters Race. Second prize isn't so bad either, an upgrade to the Leisure Prison if you make it to the finish line. To win either prize, Avene and the other prisoners must navigate one hundred and fifty miles of dense forest, desert, and worst of all, cannibal territory.
With a mechanical collar timed to strangle the prisoners if they're not back in nine days, Avene allies herself with seventeen-year-old McCoy, another prisoner that insists on helping her at every turn and a boy she's trying hard not to fall for. Together they battle nature, other prisoners, and the timed death collars to win the coveted prize. But when Avene is tested with one deadly conflict after another, she realizes there is more at stake than winning her freedom – first she has to survive.

Excerpt!

This excerpt is from the day the race starts and Avene is getting ready.

Hours later, when the birds start chirping, I know it's almost time to wake up. I get out of bed and change into my special clothes. The ones I've been saving for this day: a sturdy pair of jeans and a man's blue flannel shirt. Underneath I wear my white fitted tee-shirt, depicting a crudely drawn skull. I added the crossbones bearing a set of daggers with a nearly dried-up marker I found a year ago. It represents my mantra for the race: stay away from me or I'll kill you.

I tie my sheath around my thigh, re-lace my boots with longer and sturdier cord I found on a pair of men's boots in the goodie two shoes clothing pile, and then gulp down several handfuls of water. I wipe the droplets from my mouth while I pace like a caged panther. A few minutes later I slug down another five handfuls before I remember to fill my water bottle.

Zita leans up on her elbow. "You're sure you want to do this?"

"I have to, Zita. It's our only way out. The only way we'll be free."

She throws off her cover and leaps to her feet. "Well, we better do something with that hair. They'll start calling the prisoners out soon."

Zita snatches our slop container from the table. She fills it with dirt from the corner and mixes in a bit of water. "I'm not sure how well this will work," she says, stirring it with her finger. "Sit."

I sit on the ground cross-legged at her feet. She kneels beside me, takes a small lock of hair, and rubs mud all through the strands. The stringy tresses stick together, cold and wet against my cheek. After one side of my head is finished, she steps back and surveys her work. "Nope, this isn't working. Your roots are still too light."

"Why don't you wash her whole head in it?" says McCoy.

I stiffen. Leave it to him to think of dunking my whole head in mud.

"You're a genius!" says Zita. She grabs my arm and pulls me to my feet. "Help me," she says to McCoy and I cringe at the thought of him touching my head when I'm a direct competitor. He might send his ninja blade across my neck.

He grabs the sink, half full of water, water I need to drink, and dumps three quarters of it into the corner. "Hey, I need to drink that!" I say.

"You can drink ours," says McCoy.

Right. I'm not going to drink theirs. He'd love that. Especially now that he's going to have to hunt on his own and the only way he knows how is by poaching off me.

Zita stops short of pouring in handfuls of dirt. Instead she goes to the fire pit and scoops out gobs of ash. She swishes it around with her fingers, stares at it like she's not satisfied, and goes ahead and dumps in a handful of dirt anyway. "Okay, bend over, girl."

I lean over the sink while Zita pours the murky mixture over my hair and massages it in. It's gritty and gross.

"Hand me that old shirt in the corner," says Zita.

I'm looking upside down at McCoy while he retrieves the old shirt she uses as her dust rag. She wrings out my hair and then places the shirt over top and squeezes out the excess water. "I wish I had a comb," she says, flipping my head up and steering my behind back to the ground.

"It's okay, I can use my fingers," I say.

McCoy dashes into their room. "Boom has one, hold on."

I lean my head back in defeat. He's determined to help me, to make me feel obligated to help him in return, but his niceties aren't going to work on me.

My Thoughts :

Avene was sent to prison for something she didn't do. This isn't just a prison though, this is a hell. King runs the prison in such a way where he doesn't care if the prisoners live or die. He feeds them in a trough twice or three times a week and there's never enough to feed everyone. Its a constant battle to get food. Avene tries to supplement the meals by hunting in the abandoned part of the prison. To Avene this place is hell.

The only way to gain your freedom is to take part in The Headhunters Race. Its a race to kill and bring back Gavins head. He killed Avenes mother and is also her brother!! Avenes mom was married to Governor King and when she was killed King said she was an accomplice. Gavin got away but Avene was thrown into prison. If you win the race you are granted your freedom but even if you don't win, you can still win an upgrade to the Leisure prison. Avene had applied twice but King doesn't let her enter. This time is different.

When she gets her place in the race she has every reason to succeed. She wants revenge on Gavin and wants her freedom. She knows the race wont be easy but she has no idea whats in store. With the help of McCoy can she stay alive long enough to win her freedom?

Ok, that was quite a ride!! When I read the blurb I immediately added it to my wishlist. I got the chance to review it and I jumped at it.

From the get go you are thrown into the deep end. The prison is a horrible place and the author captured the essence of it perfectly. She made it come alive and you could picture how dank and dreary it was. The prisoners have to fight each other for food. They steal and will do anything to feed themselves. Any weakness is exploited and every second is one you have to watch your back. You trust no one!!

Avene went from living her life to being put into this place for no reason. She isnt the only one though. Anyone King thinks has crossed him is put into it. He is one mean and nasty so and so!! He has no compassion and doesn't care about anyone.

Avene is an awesome character. She is tough, strong and smart. She finds it hard to trust anyone so when McCoy keeps showing up wherever she is she immediately thinks the worse. All she wants is revenge on Gavin and King dead. She knows the race is tough but still signs up. She stays strong through the whole journey and always uses her head. The only thing I didn't like was her constant reference to Verla and what Verla said!!! It got annoying after a while.

Oh McCoy. Be still my heart!!! He totally won me over. At the start I thought he was a weird one, constantly watching Avene, but he is anything but. Strong, kind, smart and full of awesomesauce, I loved his character. He totally worms his way into Avenes life and without him she mightn't survive.

This book grabbed me from the very first page. It was action packed, full of suspense, filled with characters that will have you rooting for them and is firmly on my favourites list. Every page is a fight for survival and has you on the edge of your seat. I couldn't get through the pages fast enough but yet I dint want it to end. You think you know what will happen but you have no idea!! The twists and turns would give you whiplash! I loved everything about this and can not wait for book 2. It ends on a cliffhanger and when I got to it I was like NOOOO, it cant end like that.  I need the next book like yesterday!!! Highly recommend.

EarthFall by Mark Walden Review!

Buy The Book Now at The Book Depository, Free Delivery World Wide   Goodreads_icon_32x32

Title : Earthfall
Author : Mark Walden
Pages : 272
Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing PLC
Source : Netgalley

The battle for mankind is about to begin in this riveting story of Earth’s invasion from the author of the H.I.V.E. series.

Sam awakens to see strange vessels gathered in the skies around London. As he stares up, people stream past, walking silently toward the enormous ships, which emit a persistent noise. Only Sam seems immune to the signal. Six months later, he is absolutely alone.

Or so he thinks. Because after he emerges from his underground bunker and is wounded by a flying drone, a hail of machine-gun fire ultimately reveals two very important truths: One, Sam is not, in fact, alone. And two, the drone injury should have killed him—but it didn’t.

With his home planet feeling alien and the future unstable and unclear, Sam must navigate a new world in this gripping adventure.

My Thoughts :

The day that Alien ships appeared over London was the day that Sams life changed forever. When Sam sees the news with the pictures of the ship over London he thinks its a trick, that is until he turns to his mother to ask her and sees that she isnt responding. Its like she is a zombie. When his mother and sister walk out of the house Sam follows. He cant believe his eyes when he sees the things near the ship. Why is he the only one not in a trance? What has happened to humanity?

Six months on and Sam still isn't closer to any answers. Every day is a struggle to find food and water without getting caught.  He is totally alone, or so he thinks! When he meets another survivor he hopes to get the answers he needs.

This was a refreshing surprise. Its aimed at a younger reader but any age will enjoy it. The author has a way of drawing you in to the story. It starts straight with Sam trying to survive and dodge the aliens. He struggles for food and water but what really hits is his loneliness. Six months with no sign of any other person not affected by the aliens and you see him wondering if he is the only one still functioning.  He is a strong character but you still feel sorry for him.

EarthFall was at times hard to see where it was going and at times I was a little bored. The story itself was awesome and very descriptive but a little boring at the start.  It picked up when Sam met up with the other survivors though. He really came into his own then.

Overall it was a solid story. The concept is believable if a little odd at times. The action when it took off really made the story so much better. The characters were all strong and capable and I liked each of them. I will say that what bothered me at times was how one minute Sam has never fired a gun and the next he is hitting everything. The author didn't really give us a sense of how he trained. Even though the author did have a very descriptive manner, he did skim over certain things!

In the end I'm glad I read this. I enjoyed it and will read book 2 to see what happens. I purchased a paperback for my boys because I know its something they will love and Id highly recommend for kids.

I live alone because my dad died almost a year ago, along with all the other adults in the world. I'm almost out of food and the gangs of kids that roam around my town are getting more vicious by the day.

It's time for me to leave and find another place to live ... a place where I can find food and shelter ... a place where they won't be able to find me.

Alone, it might have been possible; but now I've got company. I'm worried that I don't have what it takes to get from here to my final destination.

And I have no idea what might be waiting for me when I get there.

To stop Heather from getting herself killed trying to prove her parents' innocence, Becca hunts for proof of their guilt. She doesn't expect to find evidence that leaves her questioning everything she thought she knew about the dissidents... and about her mother.

When she risks her life to save a dissident, she learns her mother isn't the only one with secrets - and the plot she uncovers will threaten the lives of the people she loves most. For Becca, it's no longer just a choice between risking execution and ignoring the regime's crimes; she has to decide whose life to save and whose to sacrifice.

It's easy to be a hero when you can save the world, but what about when all you can do is choose how you live in it? Sixteen-year-old Riley Meemick is one of the world's last free girls. When Riley was born, her mother escaped the Breeders, the group of doctors using cruel experiments to bolster the dwindling human race. Her parents do everything possible to keep her from their clutches-- moving from one desolate farm after another to escape the Breeders' long reach. The Breeders control everything- the local war lords, the remaining factories, the fuel. They have unchecked power in this lawless society. And they're hunting Riley.

When the local Sheriff abducts the adult members of her family and hands her mother over to the Breeders, Riley and her eight-year-old brother, Ethan, hiding in a shelter, are left to starve. Then Clay arrives, the handsome gunslinger who seems determined to help to make up for past sins. The problem is Clay thinks Riley is a bender-- a genderless mutation, neither male nor female. As Riley's affection for Clay grows she wonders can she trust Clay with her secret and risk her freedom?

The three embark on a journey across the scarred remains of New Mexico-- escaping the Riders who use human sacrifice to appease their Good Mother, various men scrambling for luck, and a deranged lone survivor of a plague. When Riley is forced into the Breeder's hospital, she learns the horrible fate of her mother—a fate she'll share unless she can find a way out.
