What to do when your plot goes down the toilet

Never set an important scene in a toilet. No one wants to read or see anything that happens in a toilet.

I guess I never was good at following the rules, even this one. I'm not the only one, either.

Some of the best action scenes take place in toilets. There's a brilliant fight sequence with Arnold Swarzenegger in the film, True Lies, that takes place in a public men's toilet. He makes use of the urinals, the hand basins and the hand dryer to clean up a bunch of terrorists.

J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books and subsequent films set several important scenes in toilets. The troll battle sequence that cements Rob, Harry and Hermione's friendship in the first book takes place in a girls' toilet, as do several scenes to do with the Chamber of Secrets.

In Jurassic Park, who can forget the scene where the Tyrannosaurus rex eats a man sitting on a toilet? A key element of humour in what is quite a gory, horrible scene. Yet it works.

I knew there were some particularly powerful scenes in my Nightmares Trilogy that simply had to take place in toilets. In Nightmares of Caitlin Lockyer, the first book, there's one about trust – where we see Caitlin choosing to trust Nathan. Much later on, there's a key action sequence that takes place in a toilet, which had some of my readers swearing at me. In between the f-words, I understood this was because of what I had shown…but also because I only showed half the scene, which is what Nathan saw. The other half he didn't witness, so he can't explain what happened.

In Necessary Evil of Nathan Miller, the whole scene appears – but in a very different light, as it's from Caitlin's perspective. Oddly enough, none of my readers have been angry at the way Caitlin relates this sequence of events.

Picking such an unusual setting for key plot points highlights them in a way that they stick in your mind. A romantic scene…in a toilet? A horror scene…with toilet paper?

As I was writing both of these two books, every time I ventured into a toilet, public or otherwise, these key scenes would run through my head. How would Caitlin react when Nathan tries to kiss her in a toilet? And what happens when Nathan leaves her hidden and unarmed in a toilet, as the people who tried to kill her come to finish the job?

Given that my Nightmares Trilogy is most definitely in the suspense thriller genre, I believe I'll leave you in suspense on this one – for Caitlin surprised me, her hero, Nathan, and I hope she can surprise you as well.
