Welcome to Gardnerville.
A place where no one gets sick. And no one ever dies.
Except...
There’s a price to pay for paradise. Every fourth year, the strange power that fuels the town exacts its payment by infecting teens with deadly urges. In a normal year in Gardnerville, teens might stop talking to their best friends. In a fourth year, they’d kill them.
Four years ago, Skylar’s sister, Piper, was locked away after leading sixteen of her classmates to a watery grave. Since then, Skylar has lived in a numb haze, struggling to forget her past and dull the pain of losing her sister. But the secrets and memories Piper left behind keep taunting Skylar—whispering that the only way to get her sister back is to stop Gardnerville’s murderous cycle once and for all.
My Thoughts :
Gardnervile is a strange place. Its a place that people come to if they are dying or sick. Its a place that cures their ailments and no one ever dies. You would think its a good thing but there's a nasty side to Gardnervile. Every four years exactly one of the young people cause a catastrophic event to happen that ends in tragedy.
When this happens they are sent to the reformatory. The place on the hill that seems to drain every person that goes there. No one returns the same. When a fourth year comes around and Piper leads all the teens to a bridge, a lot of them died. She was sent to the reformatory and since then Skylar has taken Forget Me Nots to escape. She knows she needs to save Piper and remember but forgetting is so much easier.
Every once in a while you read a book and when you finish you are like, what just happened!! Half the time I had no clue what was going on, but because of the style of writing and the story it was a good thing! It had me guessing the whole way through and I never had any idea what was coming next. It truly is a book to be savoured.
The book is told alternating between the present and what felt like letters or diary entries about the past, told about Piper, from Skylars POV. At first it was really hard to understand but as I found myself drawn into the authors style of writing I really enjoyed it.
Because Skylar is taking the drugs, her thoughts and memories are disjointed and often confusing. Every day she takes one of those purple pills and that day is one of bliss for her because its a day of fog, of no memories. She misses Piper so much and hates the Fourth years. At times she gets flashes of memories where she knows she has to free Piper and free Garnervile, but at what cost!!
When Skylar starts remembering and is more herself, you get a sense of her character. She is stronger but also so broken. There is such debt and sadness to her, its hard not to like her. Skylar is special, in fact a lot of people have powers but because Skylar is a Gardnervile her powers are stronger. She takes secrets. They call to her and while she can block them most of the time, the stronger ones get through. Her sister Piper can plant thoughts into peoples heads, thats how she got all the teens to follow her. With Skylar being able to take secrets you would think she knows all Gardnerviles ones but she doesn't. Its something she needs to figure out to save everyone.
Everything about this book was awesome. The whole way through you are left wondering and thinking. From the town itself to the people in it, its shrouded in mystery. You never know whats going to happen or if there is anyone you can trust. Is everyone as they seem? This is the type of book that gives its secrets very slowly and unravels bit by bit. The author really knows how to keep the suspense going!! This is a book that will stay with you for a long time. With its exceptional writing, dark and creepy atmosphere and a unique story, Dont You Forget About Me is a book not to be missed.
This book is already on my to-read. I NEED to have it some day! :D
