Title: Avian (The Dragonrider Chronicles #2)
Publication date: August 26, 2014
Publisher: Month9Books, LLC.
Author: Nicole Conway

What kind of power is lurking inside him?

After a year of training to become a dragonrider, Jaevid Broadfeather has been sent home to rest during a three-month interlude. But when he returns to find the king drake has chosen Beckah Derrick as his new rider, Jaevid realizes something big is about to happen. Every fiber of his being is pushed to the breaking point as Jaevid battles through his avian year, preparing for the final graduation test of the battle scenario. But there is more standing in his way than a few pushups and fancy sword moves.

Jaevid must face a new fear as he is tormented by a gruesome nightmare of a mysterious gray elf warrior murdering the royal family of Maldobar. It seems obvious to him that this is some kind of message about how the war started long ago—until Felix assures him the king is very much alive. With his strange powers growing stronger by the day, and that violent dream replaying in his mind every night, Jaevid no longer wonders if he will pass his avian year or not . . . he wonders if he will even survive it.

The truth will soon be set loose.

My Thoughts :

When Jae returns home for his break, he knows he wont get a warm welcome but he never expected that they just up and left the place without telling him! All he is left with is a letter from his step brother and a small few bits of furniture. During his 3 months there he receives a letter from Beckah asking him to come to her. He takes Mavrik and leaves.

Once there he realises that the king drake they were nearly attacked by has chosen Beckah as his rider, but girls cant be riders so what is she to do? Also while there Beckahs mum gets into trouble with her pregnancy and Sile tells Jaevid that he is the only one who can save her, he just needs to use his gifts. How does Sile know more about Jae then Jae does?

So many questions and to top it off Jaevid is suffering the same nightmare night after night and he is an Avian this year!! He is tested both mentally and physically at Blybrig academy and it takes everything he has just to survive. With his new found abilities Jaevid is pushed to the brink but will he be able to come back or is his elf side too much?

Jaevid is back and better than ever!! I loved this installment of the Dragonrider Chronicles!!

Jaevid really grows in this book, both mentally and physically. After helping Siles wife he gets a growth spurt and new abilities. Its both a blessing and a curse because he needs to figure out his abilities but because he is now an Avian, his time is spent training. Plus a new trainer seems intent on picking on Jae. Poor Jae still has all the hassle of being a halfbreed but he is so much more content in himself in this book and I loved that about him.

Again Felix adds some much needed comic relief. I love his character and I love his friendship with Jaevid. He is struggling with his own problems but he always has Jaevids back. I really loved the fact that all the characters have developed more than they did in the first book. You connect more with them.

Plot wise, Avian was awesome. It was everything book one was and more. We see more action, more adventure, more dragons and even a little romance!! The dreams Jae had were really intriguing and I loved how it all came together in the end. I had my suspicions of who the soldier was but I was wrong!!! We are left with a lot of questions though, whats with the chaos? Who is the grey Elf? What is the place the dragons told Jae about? Then the ending had me hoping for book 3. I need it now ;)

Anyway, overall Avian was fantastic. Action packed, adventurous and magical, Avian was an incredible second book. I flew through it and am eagerly (and impatiently) awaiting book 3. From the captivating atmosphere to the magical creatures and from the intriguing elves to the lovable characters, Avian is a must read. I fell in love with the world the author has created and cant wait to jump back into it and see what else she has in store for Beckah, Felix and Jaevid!

Excerpt :

“Do I know you?” Jax asked, stumbling back and forth.
“We have like four classes together…and I’m pretty sure you and my sister had a thing freshman year,” I replied, positive he couldn’t have been drunk enough to forget I even existed…or could he?
“Oh.” He raised his eyebrows animatedly, his blue eyes twinkling. “Satan, right?”
“Excuse me?” I asked, shocked by his question.
“Your name—or at least that’s what your sister used to call you…” His lips curled up into an evil smile.
I let go of his arm, but stood my ground. “Why are you being like this? You invited me,” I whispered, looking down, my face burning up.
Jax obviously did not get the memo that we were being discreet, because his volume only seemed to increase, catching more attention than I would have liked. “I invited you? In what world?” He cackled like an evil villain and then turned his back to me, filling his cup up with beer.
My cheeks were growing redder by the minute, a combination of embarrassment and pure rage. He was the only reason I had even agreed to come. I knew I was an outsider; that I didn’t fit in with his crowd—but he was the one who convinced me that everything was going to be alright. “You’re seriously going to sit there and pretend like you didn’t invite me to this party twice?” It was hard not to be fuming.
He turned around slowly this time, sipping on his beer, a calculated look playing across his eyes. “Well you obviously can’t take a hint…I’m going to give you the best advice of your life…are you ready? Lay off the cupcakes fatty! I can get any girl in here, what would I want with a pig like you?”

I looked around and realized all eyes were on us; more importantly, me. Jax had just given them the reality TV bit they craved for the night. Tears were beginning to form at the corners of my eyes and I knew I didn’t have much time before the waterworks. “Peyton…” I heard my friends call after me. But it was drowned out by the noise of laughter. Jax was laughing hysterically at what he had just said to me, and the worst part about it? Everyone had joined in. Now all I heard as I ran and pushed my way through the crowd was oinks and laughs.

WOLVES OF THE NORTHERN RIFT

In a world of science, magic is an abomination.

Magic is an abomination. It spread from the Rift, a great chasm hundreds of miles long that nearly split the southern continent in two. The Rift was a portal, a gateway between their world of science and the mythological world of magic.

On the northern continent of Ocker, King Godwin declared that no magical monstrosity would be allowed within their borders. The Royal Inquisitors were formed to investigate reports of mystical occurrences and, should they be found, to destroy them.

Inquisitor Simon Whitlock knows his responsibilities all too well. Along with the apothecary, Luthor Strong, they’ve spent two years inquiring into such reports of magical abominations, though they’ve discovered far more charlatans than true magical creatures. When assigned to investigate Haversham and its reports of werewolves, Simon remains unconvinced that the rumors are true. What he discovers in the frozen little hamlet is that the werewolves are far more real than he believed; yet they’re hardly the most dangerous monster in the city.

AUTHOR JON MESSENGER DREAMS UP HIS ULTIMATE MOVIE CAST.

Title : Ghost House

From the New York Times bestselling author of Halo comes the start of a beautiful and powerful new series.

After the loss of her mother, Chloe Kennedy starts seeing the ghosts that haunted her as a young girl again. Spending time at her grandmother's country estate in the south of England is her chance to get away from her grief and the spirits that haunt her. Until she meets a mysterious stranger…

Alexander Reade is 157 years dead, with secrets darker than the lake surrounding Grange Hall and a lifelike presence that draws Chloe more strongly than any ghost before. But the bond between them awakens the vengeful spirit of Alexander's past love, Isobel. And she will stop at nothing to destroy anyone who threatens to take him from her.

To stop Isobel, Chloe must push her developing abilities to their most dangerous limits, even if it means losing Alex forever… and giving the hungry dead a chance to claim her for their own.

My Thoughts :

Chloe has always seen Ghosts but has managed to push them away since she was a little girl but when her mother dies, they come back. She is too heartbroken to shut her mind from them. Her father is equally heartbroken and isn't able to properly look after her and her brother so he asks their Grandmother to take them for a while. Thing is that their Grandmother owns an estate in England, which to Chloe is a dreary cold place. The last time she was there the place was run down and very cold!!

Yet things have changed since then. The estate has been fixed up to be nearly as grand as it used to be and is now a Guest House. Despite the house being magnificent, Chloe knows its going to be a hard summer. She misses her mother but she is also so bored. She decides to take a walk and during it she sees a stranger. He is so handsome and regal and Chloe thinks he may be on of her Grandmothers guests. On her return from the walk she runs into him again and he introduces himself as Alexander Reade. He is a Ghost and is tied to the house and grounds. As Chloe gets to know him she realises he isn't like other Ghosts but the more time she spends with him the angrier his past love, Isobel, becomes. She starts tormenting Chloe and Chloe needs to find a way to stop her before its too late.

This is my first book by Alexandra Adornetto. I have her other series but haven't read it yet so when I was accepted to review this I was thrilled yet a little hesitant. Id read some pretty horrid reviews of her work, including this,  and didn't know what to expect. Well I was pleasantly surprised with Ghost House. It didn't knock my socks off by any measure but I enjoyed the book.

Right off Im going to get the negative stuff out of the way and will say that the authors writing style, while at times eloquent, was for most of the book very juvenile. I know the author is only 18 or something but still!! I also thought the romance element was eye rollingly nauseating. Those two factors were the biggest down fall for me. Chloe arrives at the estate and its kind of insta love between her and the ghost, I mean seriously!! How can you fall for a Ghost? I can understand having feelings for him but not falling for him. Then Alex is all, I love you so much etc but I still have feelings for Isobel, she was my first love, yada yada!! Ugh. So ya, I didnt like the romance between Alex and Chloe at all!!

No onto the good parts. Character wise, I liked Chloe. She was strong, sensible (to a point) and brave. I liked the fact that she hates that she can see ghosts but learns to live with it. I know if I could see ghosts Id hate it too!! She learns to block the ghosts out but when her mother dies, she hasn't got the mental strength to do it, she is too devastated. I liked Alex too. He is the typical male aristocrat. Strong, powerful and commands respect but he is also sweet. I liked that we found out his and Isobels story in segments and we see the sweet and respectful side of him. I did think that Isobel wasnt used enough though. I would of liked to have seen more of her because what we did see was chilling!!

Plot Wise, it was good. Girl goes to spooky house, sees ghosts and has a vengeful spirit to contend with. That about sums it up but yet I still enjoyed the concept. The setting was perfect, England does have some spooky manor houses and when its a dull, dreary day, it would be really spooky.

Overall I liked (I know Im using this word a lot!!) Ghost House. Despite its faults, its a chilling ghost story. I loved the last part of the book because the story really picked up. It left us with a cliffhanger ending so I will definitely pick up book 2 to see what happens and Im hoping that the authors style might mature a bit from now on. She has something special but it just needs to be refined.

Renna leaned back in her chair and tilted her head to study Finn. He glanced away and tugged at his collar as he leaned against the table.
“Care to tell me what that was all about?” she asked.
“It was just a discussion Viktis and I had. I didn’t know Myka overheard us.”
“And what did you two gentlemen—” she emphasized the word slightly, “—decide about my future?”
Finn cleared his throat. “Nothing, really. I assured Viktis you were done with mercenary work and wouldn’t be interested in any other contracts. That you had given up that sort of thing. That MYTH could trust you.”
“You assured him, huh?” She raised an eyebrow. “And how did you know that?”
Finn tugged at his collar again. “I thought… since you were working for MYTH…”
“That I’d give up the only job I’ve ever been good at?”
“I…”
“Save it, Finn.” She shook her head. “Neither you or Viktis know anything about my future plans. And to be honest, right now my only plan is surviving this mess. After I know I’m not going to die, I’ll think about what comes next.”
She’d spent most of her life planning what would come next—an early retirement on a vacation world. But she knew no matter what happened, that could never work for her now. If she was really honest with herself, she was hardly the type to settle down. Either in life or relationships. Which made her current situation all the more confusing. Part of her wanted to see what happened with Finn. Part of her wanted to run the moment this was over. She wasn’t sure which part would win at the moment.
Finn’s voice deepened, and he leaned forward to rest his hands on the table across from her, his gaze at her eye level. “I’ve been thinking about what comes next since we went on the run.” He looked like he wanted to devour her for lunch.
Renna swallowed.
“I hate that you left as we were getting to know each other again. I missed you, Renna.” He smiled wolfishly. “Obviously you missed me, too, if you took control of the Athena to get us back here.”
Heat blossomed in her face. “That had nothing to do with you,” she protested, getting to her feet. “I was unconscious. I didn’t even know what I was doing.”
Finn circled the table, and Renna backed away from him until she hit the wall. The expression on his face made heat pool between her legs and her mouth go dry. He stopped, just far enough away that he wasn’t touching her but close enough she could feel the heat from his body.
His blue eyes bore into hers. “Look at that. The Star Thief’s afraid,” he said softly.
She shook her head, her tongue darting out to lick her suddenly dry lips. Finn’s gaze dropped to watch. Once upon a time, she would have used that to her advantage, to seduce him and turn the tables. To take control of the situation. What the hell had happened to her?
She inhaled Finn’s scent—citrus and sandalwood. Damn him, he was right. She had missed him. But with everything going on now, she couldn’t afford to let him distract her. She couldn’t think about the future. There was only the present.
Damn, she wanted him, though. Now. On the freaking mess hall table.
Finn’s gaze trapped hers as he caressed her jaw with one of his long fingers, letting it drift lower down her neck to brush butterfly-light against her collarbone.
Renna’s skin tingled with fear and desire and lust until she could barely see straight.
And then he lowered his lips to hers. Just a soft brush of skin at first, but heat zapped through her and she sucked in a breath.
Finn took that as an invitation, smiling before he kissed her again softly. The feel of his mouth against hers sent a blaze of fire through her. Renna curled her hands into his arms, and he jerked her to him, deepening the kiss. He forced her mouth open, stroking her tongue, teasing her until she moaned.
“Finn,” she whispered, pressing herself against him, her fears forgotten for the moment. His hands tangled in her hair, and he kissed her until she was dizzy, until her knees trembled—along with other, more intimate parts of her.
He pulled away slightly to press kisses to her jaw, sliding his tongue against the sensitive skin beneath her ear. They were tangled in each other, his hard strength holding her against the wall. And she felt an even harder part of him pressed against her.
Another surge of heat shot through her. Gods, she’d missed him. She didn’t care what it meant at that moment. “I want you.”

“I know.”

Whisper by Heather Hildenbrand Blog Tour and Giveaway!

Whisper by Heather Hildenbrand
New Adult Paranormal Fantasy

The Cherokee believe when a person dies, their soul is reborn. Life is repeated. An endless cycle of lessons to be learned, love to be found, destiny to be fulfilled. For the past six months, in every flower, every bird, I’ve imagined my parents, relieved of their human forms.

Now, after five months at the Skye View Wellness Center, it was summer. A time for parties and friends, but that’s the last thing I want to do. So when my best friend Erin convinces me to attend a bonfire at Eagle Point, I can’t handle the crowd full of sympathetic stares or drunken class clowns who would use my tragedy as a way into my heart – or my pants. The solitude of the woods offers an escape, until I stumble upon a boy, unconscious and bleeding, his pockets stuffed not with identification but with poetry illustrating the beauty of dying. I’ve seen enough death. I will not leave this boy’s side.

Even after he wakes, when the only thing he can remember are visions of events that haven’t happened yet…

Excerpt :

“Whisper Grant, is that you?”
A hand closed around my arm.
I knew that voice. Barney Coleman, the richest kid in school and the biggest jackass in town. Erin and I always assumed his personality was overly abrasive to make up for his unfortunate name. I’d make sure to be tough, too, if my name was Barney. Still, he took it above and beyond. I’d heard girls—younger ones, since they were the only ones dumb enough to go out with him—say they were scared of him. There were rumors of him being forceful with a couple of freshman. Nothing official, but that didn’t mean anything. Barney’s dad was a judge. His mom came from old cattle money. Barney was untouchable. Or at least he acted like it.
I turned and found Barney grinning at me. His eyes were glassy with the drinks he’d already downed. He stood surrounded by a group of guys who didn’t look much nicer.
“Take your hand off me,” I said.
Barney blinked, like he hadn’t realized he’d been touching me until now. He dropped his hand as his lips curled into a snarling smile. He threw his head sideways in his signature, hair-tossing move.
“Whisper Grant, I do declare.” His voice held a twang that wasn’t normally so pronounced, a product of being not sober. “It’s been forever since I laid eyes on your pretty face. How are you?”
“Fine.” I turned to go.
“Wait!” Barney’s hand landed on my arm again, holding me in place. “I’ve been thinking about you. I know what happened must be hard.” Barney took a step closer and his voice dropped lower. “I want you to know I’m here for you. You don’t have to be alone.” He added extra emphasis to the word alone. I wanted to gag.
“I mean it,” he went on. He was slurring now. “Matter of fact, you look like you could use a hug right now, sweetie.”
Barney wrapped his arms around my shoulders, pinning my hands against my sides. When I struggled to shake free, he only squeezed tighter.
“Ugh. Let go. You’re drunk,” I said. The guys behind him laughed. I felt my anger spike. “Barney, I’m warning you. Get off me.”
Barney didn’t budge. “Sweetie, I’m here for you,” he said. The guys laughed harder. I felt Barney’s hands stray lower on my back, and I panicked.
I brought my knee up as hard as I could into Barney’s groin. Instantly, his arms fell limp at his sides, and he doubled over, groaning.
“What the hell?” he yelled.

I didn’t stick around to offer an answer.

The Artisans
They say death can be beautiful. But after the death of her mother, seventeen-year-old RAVEN WEATHERSBY gives up her dream of becoming a fashion designer, barely surviving life in the South Carolina lowlands.
To make ends meet, Raven works after school as a seamstress creating stunning works of fashion that often rival the great names of the day.
Instead of making things easier on the high school senior, her stepdad's drinking leads to a run in with the highly reclusive heir to the Maddox family fortune, Gideon Maddox.
But Raven's stepdad's drying out and in no condition to attend the meeting with Maddox. So Raven volunteers to take his place and offers to repay the debt in order to keep the only father she's ever known out of jail, or worse.
Gideon Maddox agrees, outlining an outrageous demand: Raven must live in his home for a year while she designs for Maddox Industries' clothing line, signing over her creative rights.
Her handsome young captor is arrogant and infuriating to the nth degree, and Raven can't imagine working for him, let alone sharing the same space for more than five minutes.
But nothing is ever as it seems. Is Gideon Maddox the monster the world believes him to be? And can he stand to let the young seamstress see him as he really is?
The Artisans is a delectably rich, layered and dark YA Southern Gothic inspired by Jeanne Marie Leprince de Beaumont's classic Beauty and the Beast.
"The Artisans has all the elements I love - spooky intrigue, strong friendships, and a romantic tension to be savored." ~ Wendy Higgins, New York Times bestselling author of the Sweet Evil trilogy.

Chapter-by-Chapter-header---About-the-Author
Julie ReeceBorn in Ohio, I lived next to my grandfather’s horse farm until the fourth grade. Summers were about riding, fishing and make-believe, while winter brought sledding and ice-skating on frozen ponds. Most of life was magical, but not all.
I struggled with multiple learning disabilities, did not excel in school. I spent much of my time looking out windows and daydreaming. In the fourth grade (with the help of one very nice teacher) I fought dyslexia for my right to read, like a prince fights a dragon in order to free the princess locked in a tower, and I won.
Afterwards, I read like a fiend. I invented stories where I could be the princess… or a gifted heroine from another world who kicked bad guy butt to win the heart of a charismatic hero. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of that? Later, I moved to Florida where I continued to fantasize about superpowers and monsters, fabricating stories (my mother called it lying) and sharing them with my friends.
Then I thought I’d write one down…
Hooked, I’ve been writing ever since. I write historical, contemporary, urban fantasy, adventure, and young adult romances. I love strong heroines, sweeping tales of mystery and epic adventure… which must include a really hot guy. My writing is proof you can work hard to overcome any obstacle. Don’t give up.
