A darkly whimsical and wickedly funny tale about a twelve-year-old maid who finds herself at the very heart of a conspiracy involving mischief, ghosts, and intrigue. Just right for fans of Lemony Snicket and Neil Gaiman, Anyone but Ivy Pocket is the first book in a four-book series and is illustrated throughout.
Ivy Pocket is a walking disaster, at every turn enraging and appalling the fancy aristocrats she works for. But our protagonist doesn't see herself that way at all. In fact, she's convinced she's rather wonderful, perfectly charming, and extremely talented. When Ivy finds herself abandoned and penniless in Paris, she has no idea how she will get back to England. Fate intervenes when Ivy is called to the sickbed of a dying duchess and is charged with delivering a spectacular (and possibly cursed) diamond necklace to Matilda Butterfield on her twelfth birthday. From that moment on, Ivy Pocket is propelled towards her remarkable destiny in a surprising adventure full of villains, mayhem, and misunderstandings.

My Thoughts :

This was a barrel of laughs!! It had me laughing out loud so many times.

What can I say about this to do it justice! The best thing about this book was Ivy. She was a phenomenal character. She is one of the most unique voices that I've read in a long time. She is only young and has such a way about her that is super frustrating for her employers but so fun to read. She says what she is thinking with no clue to the consequences.  Example

"Your eyes are a fine shade of green", I said softly. "The rest of you is a nightmare but your eyes are lovely".

You get the drift. She says things at the most inopportune times and doesn't care. It made for such fun reading and I was constantly giggling at the things she says.

She also has a strong sense of self worth!! She thinks she is the absolute best maid there ever was and everyone is delighted by her. Saying that, you get the impression that she is vulnerable and just wants to be loved!! She is an orphan and when anyone asks about her parents, she makes up fantastical stories about them. My heart broke for her really.

Ivy is also so incredibly naive too. She believes anything you tell her. That's OK, till the wrong people start whispering in her ear. She thinks she knows what's going on, but she has no idea!

The plot was a little slow but Ivy more than makes up for it. I liked the concept of the Diamond and I loved finding out the lore towards the end. I know there is more awesome stuff to come!!

In all, a thoroughly enjoyable read. From it's fantastic characters to it's laugh out loud moments, Anyone but Ivy Pocket is a must read. It's well written, brilliantly woven and captivating and I, for one, loved it. Highly recommend.
