Carlie McEwan loves many things. She loves being a witch. She loves her town of Halfway, NY - a tourist destination nestled on the shores of an Adirondack lake. Carlie loves her enormous familiar, Gus, who is 25 pounds of judgmental Maine Coon cat, and she positively worships her grandmother, a witch of incredible power and wisdom. Carlie spends her days cooking at the finest - and only - real diner in town, and her life is a balance between magic and the mundane, just as she likes it.
My Thoughts:
When a blond stranger sits at the diner counter and calls her by name, that balance is gone. Major Pickford asks Carlie to lead him into the deepest shadows of the forest to find a mythical circle of chestnut trees, thought lost to forever to mankind. There are ghosts in the forest, and one of them cries out to Carlie across the years. Come find me.
Danger, like the shadowed pools of the forest, can run deep. The danger is real, but Carlie's magic is born of a pure spirit. With the help of Gus, and Gran, and a rugged cop who really does want to save the world, she'll fight to bring a ghost home, and deliver justice to a murderer who hides in the cool, mysterious green of a forest gone mad with magic.- I went into this without reading the blurb or any reviews, and I have to say that it was amazing!! The blurb sums up the story so I won't add anything else in case I spoil something. So let's get straight to my thoughts.
The last book I read by this author captured my attention, but not as much as this!! Right from the start I became invested with Carlie and wanted to know her story. So many times the witchy books I read have the MC either suddenly coming into powers or not liking the fact that she is a witch and wanting to be normal. Not so here!! Carlie loves being a witch and embraces it every day. She uses her magic all the time and I loved that about her! She knew who she was and stuck by it.
I loved Carlie anyway. She was witty, strong, capable and a no nonsense type of girl. She helps people with her magic and loves it. Not officially of course, because no one believes in magic, but if a person leaves a note with what is needed, Carlie will help as best she can. I also loved her spirit, she is spunky and brave. So many times I was laughing out loud at what she was thinking or saying!!
I also loved Carlies relationship with her Gran. She shows such respect and love to her! Carlies Gran is quite the woman, powerful, and like Carlie herself, a no nonsense type.
The plot was fast paced and entertaining. I loved the whole saving the old trees thing, the vampire in the woods, the lake and I pretty much loved everything about it!!! It was well written and developed and held my attention till the end. It's full of magic, fantastical creatures, mystery, secrets, legends and plenty of action! I flew through the book and didn't want to take out my earbuds.
So ya, I loved this!! From it's engaging characters to it's engrossing plot, Half Dead is a must read!! I do so hope we see more from this world because I would love to dive in again.
This is the first book I've listened to by Erin Spencer, and it won't be my last. She captured Carlie perfectly and brought across her fiery spirit. She was easy to listen to and really made the story come alive.
