Picture Imperfect by Jelsa Mepsey Blog Tour and Giveaway!

Picture Imperfect by Jelsa Mepsey Publication Date: Sept 22, 2015 Publisher: Swoon Romance Genre: YA, Contemporary

Sixteen-year-old Max Prescott knows all too well the joys of cheating girlfriends and traitorous friends. He’s not eager to have his heart trampled again, but money and a fresh start can mean the difference between happiness and a dark path with his name on it.
So when Melly Hewson, a perky and enigmatic classmate, asks him to be her model for a year-long photography project, Max agrees. Melly Hewson is everything Max isn’t. She’s outgoing, witty and always knows the right words to say. And despite his best efforts, Max finds himself drawn to her.
Still, he isn’t stupid. He knows a girl like Melly will only use him and then never speak to him again. Besides, he’s been to that rodeo. As long as he keeps his feelings off the market, he won’t make the same mistakes as last time.
Yet underneath Melly’s sweet smiles lies a secret she’d rather kept hidden. And as the year goes on and the photos pile up, Max and Melly will find themselves developing through the negatives, a story that when told could push them to opposite ends of their world. But the only thing worst than the truth is, the facade that surrounds them.

10 Things I Wish I Knew About Being an Author I Didn’t Know Before

If I knew all of these things when I started writing at 13 years old, I’m sure they would have been incredibly helpful. They’re a mixture of advice, my random musings, and everything in between.

  1. Your time to write gets more limited with age. Take advantage of the free time you have now to produce some first drafts, then spend time later cleaning them up with edits and rewrites.
  2. Taking years (in my case, four) from first draft to publication is fairly normal. (It wasn’t even the first novel I finished! It was the 32nd). It will be difficult to be patient and to persevere, but it’s worth it.
  3. Other writers can do so much for you that you can’t do yourself. Everyone has their strengths in weaknesses in writing, so your piece will become much stronger with help.
  4. I got strangely motivated to try things I never would have before. Rock climbing and longboarding are two things I never would’ve tried, but I initially did just to learn to write better. Now, I have even more hobbies. I would tell my younger self to be more willing to try new things.
  5. I wish I was as in tune with my writing strengths and weaknesses as I am now. It would’ve certainly resulted in many better first drafts.
  6. The Internet is distracting (for me) and I should stick to writing by hand. More power to you if you’re one of those writers who manages to get on a laptop and not find a million other things to do besides write.
  7. A lot of social media use is required for an author. I’m still learning how to write engaging posts and to interact on various sites.
  8. There is a lot of waiting before a wave of assignments comes. I need to learn to use my waiting time to my advantage before everything accumulates.
  9. Most non-writer people will not understand my writing-related rants when I’m trying to fix one of my novels, and that’s okay.
  10. Don’t rush. Think about what the story needs to say—not just on the surface, but much more deeply than that.

Thanks for letting me give my thoughts! It’s much appreciated.
