Guest Post
I would like to thank you for allowing me to share a little about my young adult paranormal fiction novel, IN THE EYES OF MADNESS of the DECLAN PETERS CHRONICLES series, and myself. Let me start off saying that I’m a huge fan of the paranormal and urban fantasy genre.  I feel that I already spend most of my day in the real world (going to work, playing and taking care of my kids, and spending time with my wife).  When I open a book, I want to dive into a world that is magical, where anything can happen.  So, one might ask, well, why not just pure fantasy novels?  Fantasy novels tend to build amazing magical worlds that can allow the reader’s imagination to completely run free.  I would agree with that. And I do enjoy a fantasy novel every so often for that reason.  However, urban fantasy has the ability to cause a paradigm shift from how we would view our everyday life.  They like to twist the things that would seem mundane into things that really make you wonder.  And when you then add the paranormal theme to these urban fantasies what you end up with is a masterpiece that drills down the dark forbidden paths that you would avoid in real life. These stories tantalize your curiosity, fear, excitement, and bewilderment all at the same time.

I guess I would say that the idea of my novel came to me in a somewhat mystical way.  About four years ago, my wife and I had our first baby. Months of sleepless nights went by and we both looked like zombies. Then, one night a very strange dream (more like a nightmare) came to me about a teenager working in a mental asylum. The patients there were all gaunt and ghastly with very abrupt demeanor changes. Some of the things the patients were doing were fairly odd and supernatural (like levitating, retrieving objects via telekinesis, and speaking with multi-vocal projections). And I remember wandering to myself, are these people all just insane or demon possessed. Then the teenager went into a room and called the patient residing in the room, “mom.”  She turned around abruptly, and the expression on her face was terrifying as she pounced on him. I woke up immediately. As shaken from the dream as I was, I couldn’t help wanting to find out what happened to the teenager.  I tried to go back to sleep in hopes of getting the dream to continue.  But it didn’t work.  The next morning, I told my wife about the strange dream and how I had hoped that it had continued when I went back to sleep.  So my wife told me that it sounded like it would make an excellent novel and that I should write my own ending.

And over the past four years, I’ve been working hard (writing and re-writing) this story.  It’s funny how things tend to fall into place.  When I started writing the story, my role within the energy company that I was working at the time for had changed. And I ended up traveling almost every month.  There were just so many movies that you can watch on the plane before you get extremely bored, so I continued my writing while I was on the plane and at the airports during a layover.  Were I at home, I think I would have spent the time with my wife and kids instead.  And now, four years later, I published my 222-page novel, IN THE EYES OF MADNESS, with Sola Fide Publishing.  IN THE EYES OF MADNESS is volume one of the DECLAN PETERS CHRONICLES series. You can expect to dive into a magical world that mirrors our own. Explore hidden secrets behind the heroes and the villains that are sure to keep your minds wondering.

EXCERPT:

“Hold still,” he said.
I froze. My thoughts instantly drew a large coiling snake at my feet, but then a gentle wipe of his thumb swept across my cheek. I jerked away in response. “What are you doing?” I covered his path with my hand, as if the man-germs burned me.
“Hold still. You made it worse. And don’t look at me like I’m your favorite dessert, it’s not helping the situation any.”
There was a tease in his tone. “What situation?” I asked. “And I’m not. Trust me.” I displayed the most repulsed expression I could. The hem of his shirt pulled up over his crossed arms and cleared his head. “Whoa.” My palms few up. “You’re reading the signs all wrong. Put your shirt back on,” I pleaded to him. My eyes widened, soaking up the definition of his stomach. Holy abs.
“You like what you see?” He laughed, waggling his eyebrows.
I gained my composure and mocked a laugh. “I was just thinking you’re almost as toned as I am. Close, but not quite there yet, big guy,” I said, patting his stomach.
His closed lipped dimpled smile awakened something inside of me. The same smile I saw the morning on Senders Rock, the one that sent tingles through my body. I wanted to pull my eyes away. But he was beautiful.

Check out the cover of The Reaper Rises!

The Reaper Rises (Aerenden #4):
In the months following Meaghan’s reported death, her kingdom has chosen to reestablish villages, hiding behind the protection spells Garon continues to breach. Nick barely holds the Æerenden people together as he prepares them for the final battle.
Meanwhile, the Shadow Guard still thrives. Their spies have infiltrated every part of the kingdom, working to eliminate the royal family and a power they believe will destroy everything good.
Hope and trust have given way to fear and despair. Death seems imminent. And a senseless voice from the past offers the only clue for survival. Keep a fire burning...

About the previous books:

The Child Returns (Aerenden #1):
After witnessing her parents' brutal murders at the hands of red-eyed creatures, Meaghan narrowly escapes the same fate. Her best friend, Nick, tells her the creatures are Mardróch. They come from another world and so does she. Now that the Mardróch have found her, she must return to her homeland of Ærenden or face death.

Left with little choice, she follows Nick into a strange world both similar to Earth and drastically different. Vines have the ability to attack. Monkeys freeze their victims with a glare. Men create bombs from thin air. Even Meaghan's newly discovered empath power turns into a danger she can't control.

But control becomes the least of her worries once the Mardróch begin targeting her. When Nick confesses he knows the reason they want her, she learns the truth behind the kingdom's fifteen-year civil war--a long-buried secret that could cost Meaghan her life.

The Gildonae Alliance (Aerenden #2):
Several months after Meaghan's return to Ærenden, the kingdom's war has taken a turn for the worse. The Mardróch army hunts the new King and Queen, destroying villages in its wake. And Meaghan and Nick, training for battle in their remote section of wilderness, are far from safe. Danger hides in shadows and behind innocent faces. Allies become foes. Each day is a fight to survive. But in the end, only one threat matters. And it's a threat they never see coming.

The Zeiihbu Master (Aerenden #3):
Separated and on opposite sides of the kingdom, Nick and Meaghan face different pursuits which could change the balance of power in Ærenden forever.

While Nick trains the villagers to be soldiers, Meaghan and a small rescue party venture into Zeiihbu to find Faillen's young son, before Garon can use the boy's power to destroy those still fighting against his rule.

Everyone knows Meaghan could be on a suicide mission, but when Nick stumbles upon a secret concealed in one of the southern villages, he realizes that Garon might not be Meaghan's greatest foe. The enemy most likely to kill her is someone who has also promised to keep her safe.

excerpt
I start forward, my eyes on the bundle ahead of us. I cannot quite make out what it is. Something sticks out from the bulk of it, reaching across the floor like an errant branch, dried twigs.

Filled with foreboding, I draw closer, straining to make out the thing in the light of the glowstone. The mage slows beside me. My throat closes up. I stare, frozen mid-step, at the shape stretched out before me: a body that is nothing more than papery skin curled over the brittle bones within. A mummified corpse, preserved by the endless heat, untouched by nature, its clothing long since dissolved away. Its bones protrude obscenely: each rib tracing a line around its chest, the pelvic and hip bones encased so tightly in skin that the gaps, the natural spaces formed by the bone, seem translucent, as if the light were shining through thin parchment.

My stomach tightens into a ball. I swallow hard, forcing down the bile in my throat. The skull bears no expression, dull teeth showing through leathery lips, the eyes long since shriveled away. But that hand, outstretched... A plea. Or a single, hopeless attempt to escape death.

Beside me, the mage breathes a curse.

Grab your copy today for only 99 cents!
EXCERPT:

Kinsley bites her lip. “I used to hate you but now I realize who I should be hating.”
I stick my hands in my pocket to keep me from doing something stupid. “And now?”
“Now I sorta love you.”
I grin and do something stupid – despite trying as hard as I can to keep my hands firmly in my pockets, they fly out and grab Kinsley. One hand tangles in her newly cut hair that is still wet from being out in the rain too long. The other wraps around her waist where I can see her skin through the see-through portion of her dress in the middle, but I can’t touch her skin. And my lips touch her soft lips while my tongue tangles with hers in a desperate kiss.
A kiss that I was afraid I would never get again. I thought she would still hate me. I thought she wouldn’t believe me, but somehow she did. Now I just have to protect her from the truth I just discovered. A truth that is a million times more hideous then what either of us knew to be true.
But before I figure out how to protect her I have to have her. I can’t stand that I left her when she wasn’t safe. I can’t stand that I left her feeling like I didn’t love her. I can’t stand that I hurt her and I can’t stand that my cock isn’t already buried inside her within a minute of seeing her because I need to feel close to her. I need to forget what I just learned. I need to forget that if I choose to be with her past tonight I’m jeopardizing a career that I’ve worked my ass off for over ten years.
“Excuse me ma’am. Would you like another glass of the Bordeaux you were drinking?” the cocktail waitress asks Kinsley.
Kinsley reluctantly pulls her lips away from me. “No thanks.”
“Sir?”
I smile seeing that Kinsley ordered the first drink I ever got her.
“No. I’m good.”
Kinsley grabs her glass of wine behind her and finishes the last sip off before handing the empty glass to the waitress. “Thank you,” she says her eyes trained on my lips.
Before the waitress even leaves, her soft plump lips are on mine, torturing me, knowing that I can kiss, but I can’t get what I want right now no matter how hard I get for her. I press my cock against her stomach to show her how much I need her. Her eyes open and are filled with her own need. She needs me. Now.
I pull away so my lips are just resting on her. “Fuck, that look is the sexiest thing I’ve ever seen.”
She grins. “You haven’t seen sexy yet.”
She grabs my hand and then we are walking instead of kissing. I let her lead me a few feet when I tug hard on her hand until she is spinning back toward me. I grab hold of her neck and kiss her again. She gives into the kiss as I sweep my tongue into her mouth. She moans just a little and then pushes me away laughing.
“You have to stop that if you want more than just a kiss.”
“What?” my eyes widen at her words.
She leans forward until her mouth is at my neck. “If you want to fuck me, you have to stop kissing me so I can take you somewhere that is not swarming with people.” And then she sucks my neck before pulling away. I’ve taught her well.
She grabs my hand again and then she’s leading me off the casino floor. I frown though when she doesn’t lead me to the lobby to get a room. “Where are we going? Shouldn’t we head to the lobby to get a room?”
She bites her lip as she flashes me a wicked grin. “I can’t wait that long. Can you?” she cocks her head to the side and I realize I was wrong. This is the sexiest thing I’ve ever seen.
She pulls on my hand again and we are walking faster down a long hallway and then another. I have no idea how she knows where she is going, but she does. She slows when she gets to the end of a hallway and then is pushing me into a bathroom.
I grin. “You naughty girl.”
Her tongue slips inside my mouth as her arms go around my neck hungrily. It’s the most desperate kiss I’ve ever felt from her and I match her hunger kiss for kiss.
“God, I want you.”
“Then take me.”

I thought I loved him.

Guest Post:

Sebastian and the Tarot Cards by Debra Kristi

Thank you for having me. I am thrilled to be here and talk about the research that went into the Moorigad Series.

Like most written stories, working in the world of Mystic’s Carnival entailed some research. Because I was dealing with a supernatural carnival, I had a lot of leeway. After all, it’s magic and, more importantly, a complete creation of my imagination. I could make it whatever I wished it to be. But supernatural or not, I wanted the carnival to have realistic carny roots. As a result, I found myself researching all kinds of things, many things never made it into the book. The put-up and teardown of the circus tent, training of the animals, performers makeup, secret carny language, and the operation of the shows and attractions, to name a few.

Today I thought it would be fun to touch on Sebastian’s deck of tarot cards. Our hero, Sebastian, reads the cards for the carnival patrons. He’s known to be rather theatrical, with skull makeup and a cloak. Maybe he’s channeling his dark side or trying to hide his face or maybe he’s just looking for a larger tip. I’ll let you draw your own conclusions―for now.
To make the cards believable to the reader, Sebastian had to show just enough without bogging the reader down with information overload. Inspired by a particular tarot card reader I’d met, I decided to give Sebastian his own style at reading the cards. It was a little scary. There is always the chance that someone who knows the details a thousand times better will complain, but it was a chance I was willing to take…after much research.

One does not simply write a tarot card reader into a book and not give them something to work with. Sebastian had to know his stuff, which meant I had to know my stuff. I poured through books and went to readings, watched the cards get dealt countless ways. The last reading I had done, the guy threw the cards on the table every which way. The entire deck! He read them based on which cards fell where, at what angle, and in which order. He was so fast it was hard to follow, but the experience really fueled my muse.

In 2014, I traveled to New Orleans to research a different book. New Orleans is a treasure trove for someone in Sebastian’s line of work and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to explore. I found my way to shop after shop, furthering my education in the art. One particular store stocked every tarot related item I could possibly imagine. I picked up several books and decks. I would later come to realize Sebastian used a custom deck, created especially for him and his purpose. Those purpose being other than reading the cards for the patrons.

Do you think Sebastian should get a deck of cards based on the carnival and the cast? Wouldn’t that be something special?

I had so much fun writing these books and sharing about my tarot card experience. I want to take a quick moment to thank the readers and fans because you are the most important part of being a writer. Also, a huge thank you for having me here today! It has been a pleasure, and all the support is truly awesome. Wishing you all kinds of crazy magic in your day.
