Nothing ever happens in August, and tenacious sleuth Kate Shackleton feels like she deserves a break. Heading off for a long-overdue holiday to Whitby, she visits her school friend Alma who works as a fortune teller there.
Kate had been looking forward to a relaxing seaside sojourn, but upon arrival discovers that Alma’s daughter Felicity has disappeared, leaving her mother a note and the pawn ticket for their only asset: a watch-guard. What makes this more intriguing is the jeweller who advanced Felicity the thirty shillings is Jack Phillips, Alma’s current gentleman friend.
Kate can’t help but become involved, and goes to the jeweller’s shop to get some answers. When she makes a horrifying discovery in the back room, it soon becomes clear that her services are needed. Met by a wall of silence by town officials, keen to maintain Whitby’s idyllic façade, it’s up to Kate – ably assisted by Jim Sykes and Mrs Sugden – to discover the truth behind Felicity’s disappearance.

My Thoughts:
Having not realised that this was book 8 in the series till I was a bit into it, I can safely say that it works well as a stand alone!!
Being my first encounter with Kate, I did enjoy it, but did find it dragged a lot at times. At the start, we find Kate taking a well deserved holiday by visiting her old friend Alma in Whitby. On her first day there though, even before she meets Alma, she stumbles onto a dead body. The dead body being the Jewelers, whom is dating Alma at the moment. the Jeweler whom the last item he pawned was to Almas daughter, the daughter who is now missing! Kate finds herself involved in quite the mystery.
The plot started really good, but not long after finding the body, it lowed down tremendously and kind of plodded along. It did pick up again after Kates partners in crime, Jim Sykes and Mrs. Sugden arrived on scene and became interesting again. I liked seeing the story unravel and try to piece together the clues.
The characters were all likable. Kate was such a lady but also really plucky. Each character was well developed and written. I also liked the setting. A small, quaint town in England, back in the 20s. It was such a nice change from the bustling cities now!!
In all, this was an enjoyable lazy day cozy mystery. One that will keep you guessing till the culprit is revealed. I will definitely try more in the series, but maybe go back to book 1 first ;)
