Extinction War by Nicholas Sansbury Smith Review!

34848109Title: Extinction War
Series: The Extinction Cycle
Author: Nicholas Sansbury Smith
Pages: 464
Published: November 28th 2017 by Orbit

Purchase: Amazon/ Book Depository
The seventh and never-before-published book in USA Today bestselling Nicholas Sansbury Smith's propulsive post-apocalyptic series about a soldier's mission to save the world.
An army advances...
In Europe, Master Sergeant Joe Fitzpatrick and Team Ghost return from a mission deep into enemy territory only to find that the Variant army has grown stronger, and they are advancing toward the EUF's stronghold in Paris.
On the brink of Civil War...
Back in the United States, President Ringgold and Dr. Kate Lovato are on the run. The Safe Zone Territories continue to rally behind the ROT flag, leaving Ringgold more enemies than allies. But there are still those who will stand and fight for America. Commander Rachel Davis and Captain Reed Beckham will risk everything to defeat ROT and save the country from collapsing into Civil War.

My Thoughts:

I don't know what to say about this book to do this justice!!! It was phenomenal. Everything I wanted and more.

It's all out war, both with the Variants and ROT! The battle for Europe is still going strong and Fitz and Apollo are knee deep in it. The Variants there are bigger, badder and harder to destroy than what they had in America, and it's all Fitz can do to keep Team Ghost alive. Meanwhile, in America, Beckham is battered and bruised but still fighting, well just about!! Horn is trying to keep Kate safe, President Ringgold is trying to hold onto her country, safe zones are allying with ROT and things look grim, especially with the Hemorrhage Virus being used against them, but nobody will go out without a fight!!!

This book just about broke me!! I was on the edge of my seat throughout and had such a hard time putting it down, but I also didn't want to keep reading because that meant that the series would end!! I wanted to devour it, but I didn't, I took my time reading it and just immersed myself in the War. I felt everything these characters felt, I cried with them and I laughed with them. I gasped, I was tense and I was terrified for them, I was completely captivated by these characters and their journeys. I'm sad to see it end, but also happy with the way it ended!! Not all the characters made it, and those that did were changed completely, but that's what makes it so good, so real!! That's what gives this series it's heart... the amazingly written characters!

The plot of this was extremely fast paced and intense!!  Right from the start, we are thrown into the action of fighting the enemy, both in Europe and America. And boy does it get tense!! So many times had me gasping and going, no, no, no, NOOOO!! Then there were times where I was biting my nails and waiting to see what would happen next, and what happened next would break my heart, but other times would leave me smiling and going, yes!!!! It was an emotional rollercoaster, but so, so worth it! I want to talk about Piero, but I can't, I want to talk about Davis, but I can't, I wan't to talk about Beckham, but I can't!! There is so much I want to say, but I can't because it will spoil things.

In all, this book was phenomenal. As I said already, it was all I wanted and more! It even surpassed what I was expecting!! It was action packed, intense, an edge of your seat ride, emotional, and absolutely brilliant!! My heart has been captured  by these characters and I do hope we see more from them, but if the author feels that their story has come to an end, then I'm ok with that!! Horn, Beckham and Fitz have come a long way and deserve a break ;)

Seriously guys, there are very, very few books that I recommend as passionately as I do this series. Go give them a go, you won't be sorry!!!

Zeph Clemmont is a changeling with enemies in all the worst places, fighting to undo a curse that threatens to end his life. Survival means he will have to swallow his pride and trust Josie with all his darkest secrets.

EXCERPT:

WHAT IS MAGIC?
“Magic is like water. It’s required for all things on this earth to live and it cycles through the world to be reused over and over again. Some things, even some people, soak up more of it than others or require more of it to live. Children are usually more attuned to it than most. They soak it up like little sponges.” Each word from his lips carried a weight I could feel hanging in the air. “Any being on earth is capable of using it, although humans lost interest and forgot how to do that a very long time ago. Most of them can’t even see it or feel it anymore. Their minds have turned to things of metal. It can be that way for faeries, too. In fact, a lot of us have fallen from our former glory to be fed by the machines of the modern world.”
A strange, wild hunger rose up in me so suddenly it made my body stiffen. If magic was real, then surely it had something to do with all the strange things that had been happening to me. I needed to know more—I needed to understand.
“Where does it come from?”
“The moon.” He paused, holding a liquor bottle in each hand as he turned to look me in the eye. “Or at least, that’s what the old songs say. No one knows for sure. But magic is raw energy that we can use as we choose. Even a small amount can accomplish miraculous or even terrible things.”

EXCERPT
THE DARK INTERCEPT by Julia Keller
Tor Teen, 2017
In the fragile, moody pallor of dusk on Old Earth, Tin Man had been selling the day’s last bag of deckle. He hadn’t even bothered to divide the bag into smaller parcels. He didn’t need to. His customer was happy to snap up his entire supply of the pink powder, and to pay him well for it.
For the past several months, Tin Man had run a good, steady, efficient business in illegal drugs. He sold a lot of deckle. When the deckle ran out, he switched to tumult, and when tumult was hard to come by, he could always dig up a bit of trekinol. Trekinol was trash, but if nozzled directly into the heart, it could create a flutter. A baby buzz.
The transaction had been seconds away from completion. And then, from out of nowhere, the cop showed up.
Tin Man heard an official-sounding voice say, “What’s going on?” The customer heard the voice, too, and it caused him to jerk in the middle as if somebody had pulled an invisible string knotted around his waist. The customer vanished, twitching through the mud-colored twilight of Old Earth.
Tin Man also took off.
And then the cop, to Tin Man’s surprise, had followed him.
What the hell? was Tin Man’s irritated thought while he slammed across the dark and dismal streets. Nobody interfered with drug deals down here anymore. Nobody. It. Just. Wasn’t. Done. This cop, though, apparently had missed the memo.
Tin Man ran. The cop ran faster.
“Hey, wait!” the cop had yelled. “I just want to—”
Tin Man kept running.
The alley. The rain. The skid. The spill. And now, in a very short space of time, The End. For at least one of them.
But the question was: Which one?
Smacksplat. Stop. Danny hunched over Tin Man. He was panting, his black-booted feet spread wide, his body quivering, his hands grabbing the fabric that bunched at his knees. His blue tunic was flecked with mud. His dark hair was wet from rain and sweat. His face was pale.
Tin Man stared up at him, incredulous. All this trouble for a bag of deckle? New Earth didn’t care about Old Earth crimes anymore. Old Earth could do as it pleased, even if that meant the people down here ripped one another to shreds, or poisoned themselves with drugs, or whatever. Nobody cared.
What was wrong with this guy?
Tin Man didn’t wait for an answer. The cop had to die.

EXCERPT:

“Oh, my dear, what have those vampires done?”
Kenzie spun round and laid eyes on the most beautiful man she had ever seen. A tumble of dark hair caressed his shoulders. When he stepped into the light, it was a rich brown, almost with an undertone of red beneath the dark. His eyes were of the same reddish-brown tint, with an expression that sent warnings of danger throughout Kenzie’s entire body. He was imposing, standing in the doorway, a leather duster coat dipping into the blood-soaked carpet that made Kenzie want to tell him to lift it up so it wouldn’t get damaged.
“Who are you?” she asked as the stranger’s full lips curved into a small smile.
“Someone who can help you exact revenge on those who slaughtered your family.”
Kenzie lurched forward. “You know who killed them? Tell me!”
The stranger stepped forward and cupped her cheek in his hand. Kenzie flinched, the coldness of his touch unexpected.
“You are not ready yet, Kenzie Blake. But you could be. Would you leave all you know, all you could have been, in order to seek vengeance on those who did this to little Kaleb?”
His questions had Kenzie’s heart pounding in her chest. “What killed them?”
The stranger ran his thumb over a streak of blood on her face and brought it to his lips. “Evil vampires killed your family. Those who do not abide by the rules of the council. I hunt those who do not follow the rules and slay them.”
As he licked the blood from his finger, Kenzie saw a flash of fang and stumbled back.
“You’re a vampire.”
“I am. But you have nothing to fear from me, Kenzie. I only wish to help you rid yourself of the pain this will cause. I can train you to be what I am, a slayer of the evil vampires. And when you are ready, we will track down the monsters who did all of this and kill them.”
Something told her to run. Instinct screamed inside her mind. But as Kenzie glanced back at the body of her little brother, anger and hatred seeped into her marrow, and Kenzie Blake ceased to exist, replaced by a bringer of death and vengeance.
The handsome man held out a hand, which she took, the sound of sirens wailing from outside as Kenzie left her old life behind. They slipped out the back door and hurried away from the estate.
“What’s your name?” Kenzie asked the man who offered her vengeance.
He gave her a cunning grin, one of great smugness.
“My name is not important. But you, dear Kenzie, you can call me Father. Many do.” He leaned in and pressed his lips to hers before pulling away. “I have waited a lifetime to find you, Kenzie Blake. And they will not see you coming.”
He pulled her into an alleyway as police cars whizzed by. “But first things first.”
Kenzie shrank back against the wall in horror as the man snarled, his fangs elongating and ripping into his wrist. Kenzie knew she had made a mistake, and there would be no going back now. Quick as lightning, he clasped the back of her head and shoved her lips against his wound. His other hand wrapped wound her neck and worked her throat so she had little choice but to swallow, her eyes wide in fear.
Stepping back, her new acquaintance stared at her as if he were waiting for her to react. Fire erupted in the pit of her stomach and Kenzie screamed as the pain intensified until she buckled under the weight of it. The last thing Kenzie remembered before she sank into the pitch black was cool lips on her forehead as the stranger murmured another woman’s name—a name that would haunt her for years to come.
Caitlyn.

Publication date: October 24th 2017
Genres: New Adult, Supernatural, Thriller

Black eyes. No emotion. No sympathy. Only emptiness.
Piper McAdams’s life was normal. Career? Check. Boyfriend? Check. Friends? Check. One unsettling run in with a homeless man turns everything from normal to terrifying. She begins seeing…things.
Things she can’t seem to explain or make any sense.
As if things aren’t already getting out of hand, Piper receives news that the only family member she has is dead. She thinks maybe a trip across the country to her hometown will get her away from all the strange events happening.
After a late night accident, Piper isn’t in her hometown burying her loved one. She’s in a town called Hell. All she wants to do is leave, but the people seem to be holding her there for some reason.
A reason she feels threatens her life. Around every corner things become darker and scarier.
Can she escape what is coming for her?

My Thoughts:

This follows Piper, who had an abusive upbringing until the day she is brought to her grandfathers. It took her time to trust him, but life was good after that. Now Piper is living a normal happy life, when her world is turned upside down. She gets a phone call to say that her grandfather passed away. Piper decides that a trip to his home town is necessary but something happens and she ends up in a town called Hell. For some reason, people in the town want to keep her there. She feels like her life is in danger, and with the weird things she is seeing, she knows she has to get out before it's too late.

So this book was awesome!! I have to take a minute to admire the incredibly creepy cover! It definitely captures the creepiness of the book perfectly. Having never heard of this author before, I went in with no expectations and was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed this. Right from the start, I was sucked in and let me tell you, this book had a lot of twists and turns, and had me jumping at shadows quite a bit. The author has created a dark and creepy world, and one where, while I wouldn't want to be anywhere near it in real life, had me waiting to dive into it at every opportunity.

Well written and developed, this is a must read. I loved pretty much everything about this. The characters were all awesome, the plot was fast paced and scary, I mean it has creepy kids in it, and nothing is scarier than creepy kids ;) It has definitely made me want to read more by this author! Give it a go, you won't be disappointed!!!
