The Summer the World Ended by Matthew S. Cox Published by: Curiosity Quills Press Publication date: June 29th 2015 Genres: Post-Apocalyptic, Young Adult

Synopsis:

As far as Riley McCullough is concerned, her best friend getting ‘dragged’ off to Puerto Vallarta for the first two weeks of summer vacation was the end of the world―at least until the bombs fell.Life in suburban New Jersey with her mother has been comfortable, not to mention boring, to an introverted fourteen year old. As if her friend’s surprise trip wasn’t bad enough, her expectations for the ‘best summer ever’ disintegrate when she gets sent across the country to stay with a father she hasn’t seen in six years. Adjusting to a tiny, desert town where everyone stares at them like they don’t belong proves difficult, and leaves her feeling more isolated than ever. To make matters worse, her secretive father won’t tell the truth about why he left―or what he’s hiding. Her luck takes an unexpected turn for the better when she meets a boy who shares her interest in video games and contempt for small town boredom. In him, she finds a kindred spirit who might just make the middle of nowhere tolerable.Happiness is short lived; fleeing nuclear Armageddon, she takes shelter with her dad in an underground bunker he’d spent years preparing. After fourteen days without sun, Riley must overcome the sorrow of losing everything to save the one person she cares about most.

10 Meaningless facts about writing

Thanks for hosting my guest post as part of the Xpresso tour for The Summer the World Ended. I was asked to provide a top ten list of “10 Meaningless facts about writing.” Hmm. I suppose if I take these instructions literally, I’ll have to avoid injecting opinions into them. (You know, things like adverbs are bad mmmkay.)

1.) The hardest book to finish is the one you never start.
2.) Nothing makes a writer feel as good as a reader telling you something you wrote resonated with them.
3.) The hardest part about transitioning from first draft to second draft is forcing yourself to let the manuscript “cool off” for a few weeks so you can look at it with fresh eyes.
4.) The bit at the end, after the climax, when all the loose ends are wrapped up is the denouement.
5.) Those artistic bits sometimes used for scene breaks are called fleurons.
6.) Between 40 and 80 percent of the “symbolism” people interpret from books never occurred to the author at the time of writing.
7.) I made up the stats for number 6 out of thin air.
8.) When receiving critique on your writing: If one person suggests changing something, note it but don’t rush to act. If two people make the same suggestion to change something, consider it. If three or more people make the same comment – change it.
9.) Some writers have odd quirks. I like to make the first word of a novel something of great significance to the main character. Either a comment on who they are as a person or where their life is at (at the moment).

10.) It’s okay to reference the titles of other books, songs, or movies in your work. To quote exact lyrics, you must obtain permission. (Unless the song/movie is so old it’s in the public domain.)
