Excerpt:
Echo squatted in the grass by her feet. Pulling the cigarette from behind his ear, he searched his pocket for a lighter. Via twisted her hair atop her head into a messy bun, revealing her long, slender neck. Most of the time, he thought her to be tough and strong, yet parts of her body revealed a softer, more delicate side. He shook his head, pushing away such sentimental thoughts.
Via straightened her shirt and leaned forward, putting her elbows on her knees. “You’ve seen what before?”
Echo surprised himself by taking her hand. He didn’t even need to think about it as he turned it over and traced her palm lines. His fingertips tenderly brushed over a callus formed by the over usage of the queb. “You are hurt, angry, and alone.” Moving past the callus, he touched a sensitive spot at the base of her palm and winced when she jumped. “That hurt?” She nodded. “You need to wear gloves from now on, or at least wrap your hands. Protect your hands and keep them strong.” He hadn’t meant to turn this into a lesson on proper hand wrapping, but he was a bit jarred by the softness of her skin and how she opened up to him.
“Okay.”
Caressing her fingers, he watched as she stretched and flexed her other hand. He’d always believed her to be unyielding and strong, yet as he stroked her soft skin, Echo saw her in a new light. “You are not meant to be alone, yet you’ve thrown yourself into this solitude.”
Via pulled her hand from his. He reluctantly let it go.
“You need someone there, and since you can’t have the one thing you want—your family—you push everyone away.” He watched her as she listened to him. He thought she’d be livid, fight him on it at least, but she just nodded. Echo lit his cigarette up and took a drag. When did I become a shoulder to lean on?
“Have you always been the sensitive type?” He gave her a look as she pulled the cigarette from his lips. “This shit must taste like candy, as much as you’re always sucking on them.” She stuck it between her lips and took a drag.
Though cigarettes were detrimental to her health, her plush lips parting to take the cigarette made him pant like a freaking schoolboy. Echo wanted to kiss those lips; he wanted to brush soft kisses up and down the column of her neck, and most of all he wanted to sink his fangs so deep he’d leave a piece of him in her. Every man after him would know he’d been there.
Her lips wrinkled in disgust at the taste, so he pulled the cigarette from her hands and tossed the butt over his shoulder.
“Don’t do that. Nothing so vile should touch your lips,” he whispered, eyeing her lips covetously.
“Yet you want your lips on mine.” Her sly smile sent a shiver up his spine and he moved closer. “Such vile, wicked things they are.”
He was staring at her lips again, and when she licked them, he took it as an invitation. Leaning forward, he pressed his mouth against hers. He thought she’d slap him, but instead she opened her mouth and he slipped his tongue inside. She slid her slender fingers through his hair, while her other hand grabbed a fistful of his shirt. In that moment, Echo wished they were beasts so he could have her there, out in the open. But just as he deepened the kiss, just as her body shuddered beneath his hands, Via pulled away, leaving him panting with the sweet taste of her breath still on his.
