EXCERPT
"You're trying to buy a Hypton, and all you have is two hundred dollars?" Lyssa took a deep breath and hoped the shopkeeper didn't notice her shaking hands. She'd taken a big swallow of vodka, for courage, before coming out of the transpod. "It's all I have." "Don't rich girls like you get shiny new ones for your Sweet 16?" The shopkeeper leaned forward, sneering, and Lyssa could see how aged she looked. She must not be able to afford the treatments, Lyssa thought. Or maybe she didn't have a spare body to transfer into. What would it be like, she wondered, knowing that once your body wore out, that was the end of you? The other girl, the one hanging some clothes in the back, snorted out a laugh, looking sideways at her coworker. Lyssa stood up straighter. She'd worn her shabbiest clothing, her old black leggings and boots and a thick, black jacket. Her hair, usually styled and shiny, was piled messily on top of her head and stuffed under a plain black headband. She was trying not to stand out, but she must have done something wrong, because these north-enders were looking at her like she was tonight's dinner. They could tell she didn't belong here, and now she wished she hadn't come at all. "No," she said, looking straight at her, "not me." "For two hundred dollars, you could rent one for a couple of hours. There's an office in back where you can be alone with it, if you can get it to power up." The woman came out from behind the counter, and the girl from the back was slowly making her way up front. "Are you sure that's all you have, then? I like your jacket. It looks real, not printed." She reached out a hand toward Lyssa's coat. Shit, I should never have come here. "My cousin Janie said I should be able to get one for about that much. I don't feel like waiting for my Aunt Connie to buy me one." The woman blinked, and the other girl paused for a moment, then went back to adjusting the hangers. "Janie sent you?" "Well, it was one of the stores she mentioned. She said I could trust this place to give me a fair price." They all knew it was a lie, but the woman nodded her head sadly. She didn't want to be visited by the perimeter guard. Nobody did.

Excerpt:

His intense gaze fixed on mine, he held out his hand but he didn’t say anything. I slipped my fingers into his and the heat that shot up my arm and spread through me settled in like a low, constant pulse of awareness that made everything inside me tingle. I looked up and was startled to see him frowning. “What’s wrong?” The crease in his brow went deeper and the seriousness in his eyes twisted like hesitation. “Not one thing.” His words not matching his expression, he looked distracted, bordering on nervous. But that was impossible. Blaze Johnson didn’t get nervous, ever. “Blaze?” He brought my hand to his lips and gently kissed me. “My Layna,” he whispered. My heart melted. “I love you.” The soft smile that barely touched the corners of his mouth was his only response. A few months ago, the gesture and lack of words would have eaten at me. Tonight? I understood the intimacy. I knew I was seeing a smile that no one else in the world ever saw. I knew the twist of those lips and quiet reverence was a promise of what would come later when we were behind closed doors. I knew his silence meant he was comfortable enough to let his body language speak for him. I knew this because he’d taught me how to pay attention. Blaze led us to the elevator and we silently waited. When we stepped into the small space, the atmosphere swelled with his presence and the butterflies came swarming back, swirling with a heady tension I’d become addicted to. The memory of his body earlier today over me, in me, it made desire coil hot and urgent in my blood. Breathless, I cleared my throat. “Where are we going for dinner?” His thumb slowly dragged across the back of my hand like he knew my every desire-laced thought but when his eyes traveled from my face to my dress. His features became hauntingly stern. “Not far,” the gentle cadence of his voice at odds with his expression. “Is everything alright?” The elevator doors slid open but instead of walking out, Blaze turned and cupped my face. His eyebrows drew tight. “I want tonight to be perfect for you. If it’s not what you want, you tell me. Understand?” His expression, his voice, they were so fierce, he looked angry. The butterflies in my stomach became sharp angles and something close to panic seeped in. “What do you mean?” “This is your choice, Layna. Remember that.”

AUTHOR BIO:

I grew up in Northern California with my head in a book and my feet in the sand. I dreamt of becoming a painter but the heady scent of libraries with their shelves full of books drew me into the world of storytelling. I love the New Adult genre, but any story about a love so desperately wrong and impossibly beautiful makes me swoon.
I now live in Southern Florida and while I don’t get to read as much as I like, I still bury my toes in the sand. If I’m not writing or fighting to contain the banana plantation in my backyard, you can find me spending time with my handsomely tattooed husband, my brilliantly practical son and a mischievous miniature boxer…
But Seriously?
Here are ten things you probably really want to know about me.
I grew up a faculty brat. I can swear like a sailor. I love men in uniform. I hate being told what to do. I can do your taxes (but don’t ask). The Bird Market in Hong Kong freaks me out. My favorite word is desperate…or dirty, or both—I can’t decide. I have a thing for muscle cars. But never reply on me for driving directions, ever. And I have a new book boyfriend every week—don’t tell my husband.

The Dungeoneers by John David Anderson Review!

25808950Title: The Dungeoneers
Series: Dungeoneers Series #1
Author: John David Anderson
Pages: 448
Published: June 23rd 2015
Publisher: Walden Pond Press
Source: Edelweiss
The Dungeoneers is an action-packed, funny, and heartbreaking middle grade fantasy-adventure from the author of the acclaimed Sidekicked and Minion, John David Anderson.
The world is not a fair place, and Colm Candorly knows it. While his parents and eight sisters seem content living on a lowly cobbler's earnings, Colm can't help but feel that everyone has the right to a more comfortable life. It's just a question of how far you're willing to go to get it.
In an effort to help make ends meet, Colm uses his natural gift for pickpocketing to pilfer a pile of gold from the richer residents of town, but his actions place him at the mercy of a mysterious man named Finn Argos, a gilded-toothed, smooth-tongued rogue who gives Colm a choice: he can be punished for his thievery, or he can become a member of Thwodin's Legions, a guild of dungeoneers who take what they want and live as they will. Colm soon finds himself part of a family of warriors, mages, and hunters, learning to work together in a quest to survive and, perhaps, to find a bit of treasure along the way.
My Thoughts:

This was a fun filled, action packed and intense read!

I have to say that this was one of the best middle grade books I've read in a while. It has appeal for both younger and older people and hooked me from the start. I know my boys would love to read it and I have a copy ordered for them!

Colm is such a worthy hero. At the start he makes the decision to pickpocket some of the richer folks because he sees how hard his father works and how his mother and sisters do without, and he hates it. So when one of his sisters gets sick, he decides to take some money. This is his first time doing it and is surprised by how easy it is and in no time has an impressive stack of gold. But when his father finds out what he did, he goes crazy and says that he has to return it all and tell the magistrate and beg forgiveness. Colms' father heads out to the magistrate and returns with a mysterious man. Colm first thinks that he is going to go to prison but Finn Argos has a different proposal. He offers Colm a chance to become a Dungeoneer and train in Thwodin's Legions. Colm is afraid but at least he won't be thrown in prison. From the second he accepts the offer his life is changed forever!

Colm isn't the only awesome character. Lena, who is determined to be the fearful barbarian of the group, though she faints at the sight of blood, Quinn, the sorcerer, who stutters over his spells and causes weird things to happen unexpectedly and Serena, who can talk to animals as long as they aren't big scary ones!! These 3 become a part of Colms' Dungeoneer group and who fast become friends. Each and every character that the author has created were wonderful.

The setting was another plus for the book. It's set in medieval times and the gang live in a castle type school. I always love a good school story and this had all the right elements. We have mages, dragons, ogres, and every other type of magical creature you can imagine! We have magic, mayhem and plenty of intense moments that will have you reading as fast as you can to see what happens!

This is the first book I've read by this author, but it won't be my last! He has such a witty and fun way of writing that was additive. I started this book and finished it within 2 days, which is impressive for me with it being over 400 pages long! I just couldn't stop reading, and laughing!!

In all this is a witty, fun, exciting new series and one I would recommend highly. I can't wait to see more from these amazing characters and impressive world that the author has created!

Daughter of Dusk by Livia Blackburne Review!

24378711Title: Daughter of Dusk
Series: Midnight Thief #2
Author: Livia Blackburne
Pages: 384
Published: August 4th 2015
Publisher: Disney Hyperion
Source: Netgalley
After learning the truth about her bloodlines, Kyra can’t help but feel like a monster.
Though she’s formed a tentative alliance with the Palace, Kyra must keep her identity a secret or risk being hunted like the rest of her Demon Rider kin. Tristam and the imprisoned assassin James are among the few who know about her heritage, but when Tristam reveals a heartbreaking secret of his own, Kyra’s not sure she can trust him. And with James’s fate in the hands of the palace, Kyra fears that he will give her away to save himself.
As tensions rise within Forge's Council, and vicious Demon Rider attacks continue in surrounding villages, Kyra knows she must do something to save her city. But she walks a dangerous line between opposing armies: will she be able to use her link to the Demon Riders for good, or will her Makvani blood prove to be deadly?
In this spellbinding sequel to Midnight Thief, Kyra and Tristam face their biggest battle yet as they grapple with changing allegiances, shocking deceit, and vengeful opponents.
My Thoughts:

I loved book 1 of this and eagerly awaiting this installment, so I was more than delighted to dive right in when I got it. Well, can I say that this is even better than the first!

I found that Kyra grew so much during this one. She was always competent and capable but she is so much more here. She really grew up and has taken responsibility for who she is. She still struggles with the other side of her but at least she is trying to find out more about it and her family. She is still treated as an outsider by the palace people and the Demon Riders but her friends are her rock. There is only 3 people inside the palace that know about her, though one only suspects, but all hell is about to break loose and Kyras' loyalty is tested.

Tristam is as awesome as ever! He knows Kyras secret and while he struggles to accept it, he knows that Kyra is, and always will be, Kyra, no matter what she may be. Both of them know that Tristam is from a high ranking family, so a relationship isn't possible, but it doesn't stop either of them from dreaming. But when Tristam is told that his match has been made, poor Kyra finally realises the truth of their situation. My heart broke for both of them because they obviously love each other, but their relationship isn't to be!

The plot was really fast paced. Right from the start you are swept up into the story and carried away. Their is so much happening on every page that sometimes I just had to stop reading to absorb everything. We have the Demon Riders raids happening more often, the place intend on stopping them even if it means war, Tristam having to meet the woman he is going to marry, Idalee is beaten to within an inch of life and Kyra tries to get justice, Kyra is also trying to deal with the Demon Rider side of everything and being a go between the two groups, plus she is learning about her family and heritage! So as you can see, a lot happening between the pages!

Overall this was an action packed and engaging read. While I'm sad  to see this as a duology and had hoped from more, it's still a world that I won't easily forget. I loved everything about it and will definitely keep my eye on this author in future. Maybe we haven't seen the last of Kyra and Tristam, well, one can only hope ;)

The Viper and the Urchin by Celine Jeanjean Book Blitz and Giveaway!

The Viper and the Urchin
by Celine Jeanjean
Release Date: July 27th 2015

Summary from Goodreads:

Being Damsport's most elegant assassin is hard work. There's tailoring to consider, devilish poisons to concoct, secret identities to maintain... But most importantly, Longinus has to keep his fear of blood hidden or his reputation will be ruined. So, when a scrawny urchin girl threatens to expose his phobia unless he teaches her swordsmanship, he has no choice but to comply.
It doesn't take long for Rory to realise that her new trainer has more eccentricities than she has fleas. But she'll put up with anything, no matter how frustrating, to become a swordswoman like her childhood hero.
What she's not prepared for is a copycat assassin who seeks to replace Longinus, and who hires Rory's old partner in crime to do away with her, as well. Rory and Longinus must set their differences aside and try to work together if they're to stop the copycat. But darker forces than they realise are at play, and with time running out, the unlikely duo find themselves the last line of defence against a powerful enemy who seeks to bring Damsport to its knees.

Excerpt #1

Longinus sat at a corner table in the Hand and Tankard, surveying the room. He had swapped the black silks he wore as the Viper for simple leathers, the better to blend in with the crowd. He found it best to tone down his natural elegance when mixing with common folk. That said, he was unable to compromise on the cut of his clothes, and he had had his leathers tailored to within an inch of their lives. A shame that he was sitting down, really; they showed off his figure so exquisitely he should have stood at the bar, the better to be admired.
He listened to the talk around him, waiting for the gossip on the Viper’s exploits. He had spent the last few days locked away writing pamphlets about his most recent kill, and he had left them at the docks first thing that morning for a lucky few to find and read. He liked to think that his prose did more than inform the wider public of the Viper’s actions — it elevated their minds, too.
Which was why he was growing rapidly annoyed with the direction the conversations were taking: the weather, the upcoming Revels, and speculation as to whether the Old Girl, the Marchioness of Damsport, was going to pass the torch to her daughter. All of it without interest. It was incredible what mundane banalities the small-minded could find interesting.
Unfortunately, he had to rely on them to spread his reputation about town. His notoriety was improving, but it was nowhere near what it ought to be. The guards always tried to hush his activities, so he had to help things along by distributing his pamphlets. Notoriety helped him get commissions, but most importantly, one could only be an artist if one was spoken of. There was nothing worse for an assassin than obscurity.
At last, a woman he knew by sight on account of her starched white apron arrived. Mistress White Apron sat down and regarded the others around her table with the kind of smugness particular to a woman about to unveil a fresh piece of gossip.
“Have you heard the latest on the Smallport killing?”
At last! Longinus smiled. Mistress White Apron could always be counted on. Maybe he should find out where she lived and distribute his pamphlets directly to her door.
“Yeah, I hear it were that Viper character again,” said a sailor.
“Everyone knows that,” said the woman with contempt. “He leaves a card behind. But have you heard the particulars? Hmm?” She looked at the faces of her audience, so puffed up with self-satisfaction she almost seemed to be expanding. Longinus beamed. The saintly woman was about to unveil his new poison.
Mistress White Apron leaned forward. “I have it on good authority that he skinned his victim. Slipped the skin right off, like you do with a rabbit.”
Longinus almost fell off his stool. Skinned? Skinned? Had that idiot even read his pamphlet?
What is the point of me writing them if these simpletons blithely ignore them?
“Oh really? I heard it were poison,” said another woman.
“Not this time,” said Mistress White Apron. “I heard it from my cousin’s sister-in-law’s nephew. He works with the guards.” She lowered her voice. “I hear the Viper even drinks the blood of his victims, like a vampire.”
Longinus felt himself go green at the thought.
Ridiculous, this is ridiculous…
But there was nothing ridiculous about the image that was now firmly imprinted in his mind.
“You’re making it up,” said the sailor, obviously disgusted.
“I am not,” sniffed Mistress White Apron. “Just because you can’t handle —”
“If I might interrupt,” said a small pinched man at a table next to them. “I saw the body myself and…”
Longinus couldn’t listen to any more. The butchery of his art was almost as unbearable as the thought of the Viper drinking blood. He fumbled into his purse and produced two coins, which he threw on the counter before hurrying out.
The propensity of the common man’s mind to turn to the violent and bloody really was intolerable.

Excerpt:

‘How’s business, Des?’ Todd said.
‘Pumping, mate,’ Des said, ‘pumping.’
‘What about us?’ Todd said with annoyance in his voice. ‘How’s our business?’ His fists were clenched and his biceps rippled with tension. When he flexed his muscles, the dragon tattoo on his right shoulder looked like it was alive.
Des had a smile fixed on his face but his eyes were darting all over the place. ‘All your regular gigs, of course – I always look after my most important clients, you know that – plus a few other possibilities.’ Des tapped his nose and winked as if he had some sort of secret up his sleeve.
Todd’s expression was hard and his eyes were cold. ‘Tell me about those possibilities.’ The dragon came alive again. ‘You’ve been crapping on about possibilities for months now, and nothing’s come of it yet.’
Des was breathing fast, and as he undid the top button of his shirt I could see that he was sweating. ‘Top level negotiations take time. You know that.’ Des was talking fast. Too fast, it seemed to me. ‘Let’s just say that I’ve been talking to some high flyers about you, Todd. Real high flyers, if you know what I mean.’ He tried to wink again but it came out as a kind of twisted grimace.
The dragon flew towards Des’s throat but stopped just short. I saw Des flinch as Todd’s hand gripped his shoulder. ‘We’re not auditioning for the trapeze, Des. We just want to get out of this hole. We need to head east.’
‘All in good time,’ Des stammered. ‘I’m working on it, I assure you. I’m going to have some big news for you soon. Big news.’
Todd snorted. ‘To match your big percentage, no doubt.’
Des squirmed. ‘You know I always look after you.’
‘From what I can see,’ Todd raised his eyebrows and tightened his grip on Des’s shoulder, ‘you mostly look after yourself.’ He released Des’s shoulder and stepped back. ‘Get back to me when you’ve got something concrete to talk about. I’m starting to wonder if you’re the right man for us, to be honest, Des. I’m disappointed. The lads and I are going to have a little chat about our situation soon, if you know what I mean.’ He turned and walked away, radiating attitude like a growling Harley.
Des rubbed his shoulder. ‘Don’t do anything hasty,’ he called out. ‘I’m working on a major opportunity here. We’re talking major. It’s just taking a bit of time to sort out the loose ends.’
‘Don’t take too long,’ Todd said, not even bothering to turn back. It wasn’t until the dragon had disappeared from view that I realised I’d been holding my breath.

To Bear an Iron Key is the first in a new and exciting series from acclaimed author Jackie Morse Kessler.
Five years ago, the young witch Bromwyn refused a gift from the powerful fairy king. Tonight, on Midsummer, that decision comes back to haunt her. When her best friend Rusty picks the wrong pocket, he and Bromwyn are all that stand between their village and the rampaging fairies who have pushed through the World Door. If they cannot outwit the fairy king and queen before the World Door closes at sunrise, the friends will lose everything—their village, Bromwyn's magic, and Rusty's life.
From To Bear an Iron Key by Jackie Morse Kessler: "Bromwyn turned to face the burning fields. Reaching deep inside of herself, she closed her eyes and touched the core of her power, the place where her magic lived, where it connected her to all of Nature. She held onto that magic, let it fill her almost to the bursting point, and then she cast it out onto the fields. It blanketed the rows of spelt, and she felt as it rode the wind—Air—and then touched the grain—Earth—and then sizzled around the fire."

For hundreds of years, dark clouds covered the skies of Adamah, and an ageless king ruled. Those who emerged with one of six extraordinary Shay powers were forced into the king’s army, an unmatched force with inhuman Strength, Speed, Accuracy, Perception, Empathy, and Healing. With the army behind him, the king—a man who wields all six abilities—was invincible and unquestioned in his rule. To most, serving the king was an honor. But for others, it was a fate worse than death.
When seventeen-year-old Nolan Trividar witnesses the transformation of his brother from kind to cruel after entering the king’s army, he vows never to follow the same path. So when his own power—the Shay of Accuracy—comes upon him at the Tournament of Awakening, Nolan conceals his emergence instead of joining the king’s ranks. For years, he traitorously hides his power, pretending to be only a gifted scribe. But when Nolan comes face -to-face with a deserter, the man discovers his secret. To evade detection and a death sentence, Nolan escapes with the deserter and flees into a night filled with dark creatures who steal both powers and souls. He joins a resistance, a village hidden deep in the forest, filled with others who secretly wield a Shay. But his peace is short-lived when they discover that the dark clouds, undead creatures, their own decreasing powers, and even the king, are all connected.
