There are no good guys in the world of shadows...but maybe some bad men are better than others.
Derek Hawthorne was born to be an agent of the Red Room. Literally. Raised in a conspiracy that has protected the world from the supernatural for centuries, he's never been anything other than a servant of their agenda. Times are changing, though, and it may not be long before their existence is exposed.
When a routine mission uncovers the latest plan of magical terrorist the Wazir, Derek finds himself saddled with a new partner. Who is the mysterious but deadly Shannon O'Reilly? What is her agenda? Couple this with the discovery that the Red Room has a mole seeking to frame Derek for treason and you have a plot that might bring down a millennium-old organization. Can he stop the Wazir's mission to expose the supernatural? And should he?- My Thoughts:
- I became a fan of this author when I read his The Rules of Supervillainy series and honestly couldn't see how he could better that, well he just did!!! This book was amazing!!!Derek is an exceptional spy (he thinks so anyway ;)) for the Red Room, an organisation that protects humanity from supernaturals and all they can do. The Red Room is the type of organisation that you are born into and your whole family will be part of. Derek and his twin are spys and his dad is a big wig in the firm. He doesn't exactly stick to the rules but he always seems to get the job done. His current assignment is closer to home than usual. Someone is unleashing a devastating virus that make people Zombie like and if this get's out in the world then it's game over!!! Derek is tasked with finding out who is behind it and who the mole is inside the Red Room. Along with his new partner, Shannon, can he stop the bad guys in time??Derek was such an awesome character. He is the type who doesn't like to bow to authority and likes to do things his own way, even if it get's him in trouble. This mission sees him investigating his ex wife and finding out things about things that he never knew ;) As is C.T's style, he really knows how to write a great character!! Everyone of them are well written and developed, kick ass and sarcastic as hell, but they all have many layers that unravel slowly throughout and you can't help but root for them! I loved Penny and her girlfriend, I loved Shannon and found her very intriguing but most of all I loved Derek!!!Everything about this book was amazing, from the gripping and entertaining storyline, to the fantastical realm the author created, this is a must read. C.T Phipps has created a world that will never get old, a world where magic and technology go hand in hand, a world that captivated me and makes me want to dive into it again!! This book was action packed, magic filled, hilariously funny at times and absolutely made it's way into one of my favourites. All I have left to say is, read this book!!!!! In fact read this authors books!!! He is phenomenal.Jeffrey Kafer just knows how to tell a story!! He captures all the nuances perfectly and really brings the book to life. He also has a way that realy brings across the snarkiness of the characters and the dry sense of humor brilliantly. He is a narrator that I always recommend.*I received a copy of this from the author for review. This in no way affected my thoughts*
