The Daemoniac
Kat Ross
(A Dominion Mystery, #1)
Publication date: October 12th 2016
Genres: Historical, Mystery, Young Adult

It’s August of 1888, just three weeks before Jack the Ripper will begin his grisly spree in the London slum of Whitechapel, and another serial murderer is stalking the gas-lit streets of New York. With taunting messages in backwards Latin left at the crime scenes and even more inexplicable clues like the fingerprints that appear to have been burned into one victim’s throat, his handiwork bears all the hallmarks of a demonic possession.
But consulting detective Harrison Fearing Pell is convinced her quarry is a man of flesh and blood. Encouraged by her uncle, Arthur Conan Doyle, Harry hopes to make her reputation by solving the bizarre case before the man the press has dubbed Mr. Hyde strikes again.
From the squalor of the Five Points to the high-class gambling dens of the Tenderloin and the glittering mansions of Fifth Avenue, Harry and her best friend, John Weston, follow the trail of a remorseless killer, uncovering a few embarrassing secrets of New York’s richest High Society families along the way. Are the murders a case of black magic—or simple blackmail? And will the trail lead them closer to home than they ever imagined?

My Thoughts:

Harry's sister, Myrtle, is a renowned female detective and has solved a lot of crime, and Harry longs to be like her. She get's her chance when a couple approach her thinking her to be Myrtle, and ask her to help find their missing friend. Harry doesn't correct the couple and thinks this is her chance to show people she can do exactly what Myrtle does. What follows is an adventure into the deepest darkest secrets that New York has to offer!

I loved this authors first book and immediately on seeing the cover of this one, I knew I had to read it! And I'm so glad I did, this has absolutely everything a good book should!!

Character wise, I loved Harry. She was so plucky and eager to show that she wasn't a little girl anymore. I also loved Dr John Weston, Harrys best friend and doctor in training! Their dynamics was amazing and really made you root from them.

It took a little to get into the mindset of the 1800s but once I got used to it, I loved it. The authors descriptive writing made it really easy to visualise the damp, dirty places and the rich, elegant houses.

The plot was a little bit of Holmes mixed with the demonic. With murders happening that seem ritualistic, and thing spiraling, is this truly demonic or is it simply a demonic person? Harry sure has her work cut out for her to unravel this mystery! I loved that it's also a guessing game for us too, and we have to follow along with Harry to find out what's happening!

In all, this is an incredibly well written and developed story and one that will grab you from the very first page. With incredible characters and intricate settings, this is a must read. That ending!!! Can't wait to see where the author goes with it!!
