GUEST POST

Creating The Window Series

People often ask what it takes to write a book. Here’s a look at how I created the Window series, made up of The Second Window (book 1, released in December 2017) and Through the Glass (upcoming sequel releasing on April 3rd, 2018!).
My ideas often pull from emotions I have felt in my own life, or experiences I’ve been through to some extent. However, the bulk of my brainstorming happens on road trips, when I’ve successfully trapped my husband in the car with me for hours! With the kids situated in the back with snacks, movie devices, and coloring books … after a considerate amount of time on the road, I pull out a notebook and give my husband a gleeful look. “It’s time,” I say with a hint of theatrics, and he’ll sigh and roll his eyes like he’s dreading the next few hours (when in reality, it’s fun to see his eyes mirror mine, lighting up as we discuss scenarios and characters.) Here’s my husband acting cool, like he’s not just as excited as I am to be plotting.
The six-hour trips from Las Vegas, Nevada to South Jordan, Utah have been good to us! The inklings of book one (The Second Window) began after my husband shared a conversation with me that he’d had with another attorney. This attorney told him a bizarre story about how he’d witness some odd interactions with a set of parents and their child. The wheels started turning as I thought, that with a dramatic amount of tweaking, I might be able to make something more of this odd behavior. (Yay for weirdos!) So began the creation of a new book that eventually split into a duology when the plot took on more depth than I’d planned. My initial conclusion just wasn’t satisfying enough to be summed up so quickly in one book, and so I set off to write a sequel for the very first time in my writing career. The setting takes places in Kingman, Arizona, a city two hours south of Las Vegas. However, some of the scenes were inspired eight years ago when I went four-wheeling in Gunnison, Utah! My husband and I cruised around on a four-wheeler, exploring some open land with a friend. Since I wasn’t driving, I spent the time day-dreaming about a young couple trapped in a flash-flood while out in the middle of nowhere. I still remember pestering my husband with random outbursts of, “Hey! What would happen if… What would you do when…” (He humored me, as usual, ‘cause he’s the best.) At one point, we also came across an abandoned trailer that offered some sketchy material. These ideas made their way into book one after years of hibernation! So, for anyone looking for writing tips, the first thing I say is not to discount any idea. Write them all down because someday it just might fit perfectly with one of those stories floating inside your brain.

Creation is a process. Even when you think you know exactly where your story is headed, be sure to drop the rigidity once in a while and open the door to those imaginative juices. While writing this series, I had a good idea of where I wanted it to go. However, the best parts arose organically through stimulating conversation with my family. Discussing multiple options molded the plot just right.
I’ve loved the complex layers in The Window Series and hope you do, too!
