Zia, The Teenage Zombie & the Undead Diaries by Angela Scott Book Blitz and Giveaway!

ZIA, The Teenage Zombie & the Undead Diaries
by Angela Scott
Release date: September 20th 2015

Summary from Goodreads:

Zia would give anything to be a typical teenager... again. Heck, she’d settle for being a vampire or smelly werewolf, but a member of the walking dead? The lowliest of all the monsters? No way! Nothing is worse than being a skin-sloughing, limb-losing, maggot-housing, brain-craving undead girl. Nothing.
It wouldn’t be so bad if humans didn’t insist on “Living Impaireds” wearing bands to keep their insatiable appetites in check. And if LIs want to coexist with humans, then rules must be followed, no matter how ludicrous they might seem. Why do undead teenagers have to go to high school anyway?
Zia does her best to blend in and go unnoticed, but when a new group of LIs are bused in from another school and she finds herself part of a growing horde, all bets are off.
Besides, rules are meant to be broken—especially when an unbeating heart is pulled in two different directions.

Excerpt:

I push open the door to Mr. T’s room and hesitate before stepping inside. Large machines and shiny metal tools line the walls and various work benches. There’s an ominous humming coming from one extra intimidating machine to my left, and there’s an overall painter-sawdusty smell that permeates the air. Crap. Lewis was right. I could lose more than my brain here.

I’m about to change my mind and walk away when Eli calls to me. "Zia, over here!"  He’s sitting near the back, his backpack tossed on the floor, and several bottles of chemicals on the table in front of him. He waves me over.

I didn’t even know he knew my name. Being only one of two zombies in the school, I should have figured he’d know.

I start walking to where he sits, waiting for me. The wood shop is empty. Not even the teacher is here, which I find rather disturbing. Shouldn’t someone be monitoring our activity? What if Eli is about to blow up the place with his chemical concoction or tries to decapitate me? There are laws against both of those things, but it doesn’t stop some people from trying it.

"I’m not going to hurt you," he says. "I think I got it figured out."

I’m still not sure about this. Sandpaper lies next to everything else he has placed on the table. Sandpaper can’t be good.

"You still got your finger?" He looks at me, and I nod. I reach in my pocket and hand it over to him.

He turns it over, studying it, before he sets it down. "Let me see your hand."

I’m rather embarrassed. I’ve been trying to hide it all day—self-conscious, I guess.

"It’s okay." He holds his hand out to me, and I slowly slip my hand into his. He doesn’t freak or scream. He looks at the knuckle where the finger snapped off and stares at the jagged bone. "Do you know how you did it?"

I shake my head. "I have no idea. It was attached one minute. The next, it was in your hand."

"Interesting," he says while still holding my hand in his. He glances at me and smiles. "So you don’t feel any pain at all?"

"No, nothing."

"Then you need to be more careful."

I indicated my finger on the table. "Don’t I know it."

"Your hand’s really cold." He turns my hand first one way and then another.

"Sorry." I try to pull my hand from his, but he continues to hold it and doesn’t let go.

"It’s okay," he says. "It doesn’t bother me."

I ask the question that’s been on my mind all day. "Why are you doing this?"

He narrows his brows and looks at me as though I’ve asked an odd question. "I thought I could help."

"That’s exactly what I mean. No one helps me. Not now, anyway."

He’s still holding my hand. "I refuse to play school politic type games. I have nothing against vamps or werewolves"—he pauses and looks at me—"or zombies, but if anyone tries to bite me or suck my blood, I’ll have to kill them."

I nod. "Fair enough." I wouldn’t expect any less. It was only several months ago I carried a wooden stake, a machete, and small pistol loaded with silver bullets in my backpack. ‘Tis the way of the world now. Most everyone has some sort of concealed weapon on them, including preschool children.

Now, I’m on the other side, hoping no one will use their weapons on me. I do my best to behave and follow the rules, all of them, even if I don’t completely agree.

"For the epoxy to stick, I’ll have to sand down the two ends of the bones. They won’t match up and hold together otherwise, but I can have this fixed in no time."
I watch him fold the sandpaper lengthwise, grab my hand once again, and with as much gentleness he can afford, he runs it across my exposed bone, being careful not to nick the remaining skin around it.

"You doing okay?"

"Yeah, I’m fine. It doesn’t hurt." Vibrations run up the length of my arm. That’s it. I feel no pain.

"Did you miss the bus?"

"Yeah, but that’s okay. If you can fix my finger, it will be worth it. My dad is still having a hard time with this whole me being-a-zombie thing."

"I can give you a ride home if you like."

"That’s okay. I don’t want to put you out. You’re doing enough as it is and, really, I can walk. It’s not far." My home is only a few miles from the school. If I’m lucky, don’t run into trouble and walk faster than my normal gait, I should be home a little after dark.

"And risk you losing another finger? No way. I’ll take you home."

"Eli, that’s nice and everything, but...I’ll stink up your car. It’s not an easy smell to get rid of either. It’s better if I walk." I hate bringing it up.

"I have a motorcycle. The smell won’t even be a problem." He looks up and stops sanding my finger. "Besides, your smell isn’t that bad. Rory’s is much worse."

He picks up my finger and sands the bone. When he finishes, he sets it aside and begins to mix the powder and liquid compounds.

"This will set fast, so I’ve got to get it right the first time. You don’t want me gluing your finger on backwards."

A backward finger would be the least of my problems, but I don’t say so. He puts a bit of the goo on my finger, takes my hand once more, and presses the two pieces together.

"Isn’t Isabelle your sister or something?" He continues to hold my finger in place.

"Or something. She’s my step-sister. Why?"

He shakes his head. "No reason. I was trying to connect the dots. I guess being step-sisters would explain why you’re pretty cool to talk to and she’s... not. No offense, but she's a bit of a snob."

"No offense taken. I completely agree with you. Imagine what it’s like living with her."

Eli laughs a little. "That’s okay. I’d rather not." He releases my hand. "Test that out. See what you think."

I bend my finger and move it around. It seems to be working fine. Eli grabs my reattached digit and gives it a tug. "Don’t toot."

"What?"

"Never mind," he says. "Bad joke. Looks like it’s holding."

Eli did a great job. He even glued the skin around my finger into place and unless someone looks closely, no one could even tell.

"Thanks. It looks almost as good as new.""No problem. Let me clean up here and then I’ll take you home."

He’s the first human, besides my parents, to take any interest in me. It’s kind of strange. Even though I’m not sure what to make of it, I like it.

About the Author
I hear voices. Tiny fictional people sit on my shoulders and whisper their stories in my ear. Instead of medicating myself, I decided to pick up a pen, write down everything those voices tell me, and turn it into a book. I’m not crazy. I’m an author. For the most part, I write contemporary Young Adult novels. However, through a writing exercise that spiraled out of control, I found myself writing about zombies terrorizing the Wild Wild West—and loving it. My zombies don’t sparkle, and they definitely don’t cuddle. At least, I wouldn’t suggest it. I live on the benches of the beautiful Wasatch Mountains with two lovely children, one teenager, and a very patient husband. I graduated from Utah State University with a B.A. degree in English, not because of my love for the written word, but because it was the only major that didn’t require math. I can’t spell, and grammar is my arch nemesis. But they gave me the degree, and there are no take backs. As a child, I never sucked on a pacifier; I chewed on a pencil. I’ve been writing that long. It has only been the past few years that I’ve pursued it professionally, forged relationships with other like-minded individuals, and determined to make a career out of it.

Excerpt:

"What are you staring at?" She drops her gaze.
"You."
"Why? Do I have food on my face?"
I put my index finger under her chin and bring her gaze back up again. "I'm staring at you because I like what I see. That's all."
She leans forward and stops a breath away from my lips. "I like what I see, too." She breaches the gap between us and kisses me.
I cup the back of her head, and she lets go of the sheet covering her torso. Her warmth radiates through me and stirs something down below again. My hand skims the underside of her breast as our kiss becomes something more, something vital.
"Bas, my parents are probably home by now. I gotta go," she says against my lips.
"Humm?" I pretend I didn't hear her, moving my lips from her mouth to her chin, down her neck. Her breathing becomes shallow, but she pulls away, and her hands rest on my chest, keeping me from following her.
"Bas, I'm serious."
"Okay, okay." I rub my face, trying to dispel the lust fog clouding my brain. I shouldn't even attempt a second round with her now. She says she's not sore, but I'm pretty sure she will be in a couple of hours. I should let her recover.
Liv gets out of bed and searches for her clothes scattered on the floor. I lean back on my elbows and watch unapologetically.
"Stop staring, Bas." I see the corners of her lips twitch up.
"I can't help myself when you're parading that hot bod of yours in front of me."
She hits me with her t-shirt before putting it back on.
"So, what do you want for your birthday?" I ask.
"Bas, you don't need to give me anything."
I roll my eyes. "You're going to make it difficult, aren't you?"
"Of course." She smirks.
Fully dressed now, she comes to me and places her hands behind my neck. My arms encircle her waist, and I pull her closer.
"Thank you," I say.
Her eyebrows furrow, marring her lovely face. "For what?"
"For letting me be your first. Your first everything."
Her face relaxes, and she traces my hairline, all the way down to my jaw. "I wouldn't have wanted anyone else but you. Thank you for making my first everythings the most treasured experiences of my life."
"There are more firsts in your future, Liv. And I want to be there for all of them."

“Wow! You’re actually good.”
Adam glanced over his shoulder at hearing Reese—words of surprise no guy ever wanted to hear—to see that she stood over his drawing table. Invading his space behind the counter. He thanked the customer in front of him and handed him his bag of comic books. He watched the customer leave before walking up behind Reese.
“Could you—” He gestured to the other side of the counter, the storefront for customers.
She shrugged. “Oh, sorry.” She moved to the other side, but continued talking. “It’s just that I see you drawing all the time. I wanted to check it out.”
Adam moved his panels and sheets of paper back to the order in which he had them. Even if he were to invite her to look at his work, he wouldn’t let her shuffle them like a deck of cards. Although she was now standing six feet away, he could still smell her lingering scent. Something soft, but he couldn’t quite place it. He found it distracting.
While he continued to straighten his table, he asked, “Is there something you needed help finding?”
It was a ridiculous question because she was able to find things in the small store as easily as he could. She’d been coming in at least once a week for months, ever since one of their competitors had shut down. Reese had strolled in looking for the latest Batgirl comic and his life hadn’t been the same since.
“So what are you drawing?”
“Nothing special. Just working up some ideas.”
“Those aren’t random doodles. I know a superhero when I see one. Who is he?”
Adam set his papers back on the desk. He rubbed the back of his neck, irritation grinding into his muscles. “He doesn’t have a name. Not yet anyway.”
“He’s pretty awesome. You need to name him.”
“Yeah, I’ll get right on that.” As if he hadn’t already spent his entire afternoon doing just that. He crossed his arms. “So what are you here for today? You picked up all of your regular issues earlier this week.”
“I came to see you.” She leaned forward on the counter in front of the register. “I have a proposition for you.”
At least these were better words to hear than her first statement. He joined her and braced his palms on the glass and waited.
“I have to do a senior project. My plan is to publish an anthology of comics.”
They’d talked about comics plenty over the months. They both had strong opinions, and he enjoyed arguing with her. He also knew that she was a writer, not that he’d ever read any of her stuff.
“And?” he prompted.
“I need an artist. I have most of the stories done.” She tilted her head side to side, her straight dark hair swaying with the movement. Squinting her eyes, she said, “Well, they need polishing and maybe some revising, but I figure they’ll get fine-tuned as we get to the storyboard phase.”
“We?” No way was she asking what he thought.
“If you agree to be my partner, yeah, we. I’m under a bit of a time crunch because I have to have things in place to start my crowd-funding campaign. So it’ll be a lot of work, but you’ll get paid. At least you will if the campaign gets funded. Plus, I figure we have holiday break coming up so we won’t have to worry about classes.”
“You want me to illustrate your comics?” The thought was a massive blur in his brain. Working together on a comic was intense. He doubted they could get along long enough to complete anything. They managed to argue about just about everything related to comics.
“Yeah. I had the idea a couple of weeks ago when I saw you working at your table. You were so passionate and into it, that it swallowed you. I get like that when I’m in the zone writing. I need that kind of partner.” Her stormy blue eyes focused intently on him from beneath her shaggy bangs.
“Do I really need to point out that we don’t get along?”
In truth, Reese was one of his all-time favorite customers. She was smart and argued with passion. It was almost enough for him to forgive her for choosing DC over Marvel.
“Who said we have to get along? I’m an excellent writer. From what I can see there, you’re an excellent artist. Together, we can put together a fabulous book. “ She leaned closer, almost to his side of the counter. “Afraid you can’t handle me?”
He chuckled. “Sorry to disappoint, but you don’t scare me. However, I don’t like to waste my time.”
She eased back. “How about this? You can read the story for the first book. Then make your decision. But it’ll have to be fast because I have to have everything in place before my campaign goes live. The book doesn’t need to be complete, but I have to have enough to entice people to back me.”
The idea intrigued him, but Reese would never have been his first choice for a partner. Getting paid to draw was exactly what he was looking for. And if her campaign got fully funded, he would have a publication credit to his name. Having experience like that would help as he started his job hunt after graduation. “Bring it by. I’ll take a look.”
Her face lit up almost as brightly as when she’d tried to convince him that Batman was better than Iron Man. “Excellent.” She reached into her messenger bag and pulled out a purple folder. “Here you go.”
He eyed the folder. “You were that sure that I’d say yes?”
She winked at him. “I was cautiously optimistic.”

Excerpt:

I drew my knees into my chest and began to sing. In hysterics, my fingernails gouged holes in the flesh on my shins. The words barely made it past my lips as salty tears invaded my mouth. Right here, I wanted to forget the person who did this to me, who made me this way.
You were only waiting for this moment to be free.
God help me. I couldn’t do this anymore. I just wanted to end it. That would be the only way to make it better. Free myself of the agony. Living this way just wasn’t worth it anymore. I might as well finish myself off all at once instead of shutting down one cell at a time.
I ripped the portals of torment from my ears and threw them down in disgust. “Please, God. Give me a sign. Something. Anything. What am I supposed to do?” I shivered, a weeping lump of flesh.
The silence around me was deafening. The only sound was the sporadic hitch of air that came from your chest after a good bout of hysterics.
            Breathe in. Breathe out. Hitch.
Breathe in. Breathe out. Hitch. Hitch.
Frantically wiping up and down my face, I dragged myself off the lounge chair. Going to the perimeter of the roof, I peered down, wondering what it would feel like to free fall to the bottom. Take hold of my fate and say fuck it. Break these chains and finally be free.
I pulled myself up and over the cold cement rail and settled my back against it. Holding on, I stared down at the tiny cars as I inched up on my tippy toes and leaned forward. Maybe I could fly like a blackbird. Dragging my bottom lip between my teeth, I creeped further, teetering on the edge. My stomach lurched, and I swallowed hard.
            Pussy.
Another breath and I pushed back, unable to go through with it. That prick wasn’t worth ending my life over. He’d already taken too much of me; I couldn’t allow him that as well.
You were only waiting for this moment to be free.
