Title: Pretty Dark Sacrifice (Pretty Dark Nothing #2)
Publication date: July 28, 2015
Publisher: Month9Books, LLC.
Author: Heather L. Reid
It’s been five weeks, two days, and eight hours since the demons forced Quinn to throw herself into the raging river, since Aaron sacrificed himself to save her, since his body disappeared without a trace. Everyone wants Quinn to move on, but she can’t, not after a spirit appears to her at Aaron's memorial, convincing her he’s still alive. When a mysterious box materializes on the very spot Aaron disappeared, Quinn finds she’s at the center of an ancient prophesy of betrayal, revenge, and sacrifice that takes her to the depths of the underworld to face Lilith—Adam’s first wife. If Quinn can stop Lilith from unleashing the demon horde Eve, trapped inside the box during the Battle of Eden millennia ago, she will save the human realm and free Aaron from an eternity in torment. All it will cost is her blood.

Where do your ideas come from?
Ideas can come from anywhere and everywhere if you’re paying attention. I’ve had ideas while on long road trips, walking the dog, from a snippet of conversation overheard at a restaurant, while watching a movie or reading a book, from a piece of artwork, a walk in the forest, staring out the window, and my favorite idea generating place, the shower.
How do you develop your writing ideas?
Each idea is a little different and has to be approached in a unique way. Sometimes I get a flash of a character or am intrigued by a certain setting. First thing I do is start asking questions and go from there. For example, with the Pretty Dark series, I wanted to explore this idea of inner demons coming to life. We all have those voices inside that whisper that we’re not good enough. So I began to wonder what it would be like if those voices manifested into something that could be seen and heard. What if one teenage girl could see the demons? What if she was the only one who could see them? What would her life look like? How would that affect her relationships? Her school work? Are they real or is she crazy? Would she tell anyone? Why can she see them? What do they want? Each question that gets answered creates another question, and the foundations of the idea begin to take shape into a story.
Where do you find inspiration for your characters?
Real people are complicated and complex, and I try to reflect some of that complexity in all my characters. Character inspiration can come from observing people, from reading and watching movies, as well from personal experience and relationships.
When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
I’ve always loved books, spending countless hours in libraries and bookstores devouring stories. At the age of 11 I started my first novel. (No, you can’t read it. It’s buried in a deep dark hole somewhere in the Tasmanian Outback and guarded by a three-headed dingo.) I told my parents I wanted to be published by the age of sixteen. I also told them I wanted to be Wonder Woman, a Dallas Cowboy cheerleader, a Broadway star, and an archaeologist. Those dreams faded. I never did get that invisible jet, but the dream of being a writer stayed with me.
What makes you unique as a writer?
All writers are unique because no two perspectives or set of experiences are the same. I do write YA in third person and in multiple points of view, which is different than a lot of the other YA out there. I also don’t shy away from dark themes.
What writers inspire/d you?
Madeline L Engle, Robin Hobb, George RR Martin, Dean Koontz, Jean M Auel, Anne McCaffery, Ursula LeGuin, Stephen King, Jane Austen, The Bronte sisters, Libba Bray, Robin La Fevers, Maggie Stiefvater, Frank Herbert, Mary Shelley, V.C. Andrews, Poe, Shakespeare, and so many more!
How has your writing career changed since you started?
Well, I’m living in a different country than I did when I first got published and we’ve made some sacrifices so that I can stay home and write to pursue my dream. Not having a full time job while writing means I have a better routine, but it also means we have less income. It’s worth it though.
What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
I don’t like writing out of sequence and I also edit as I go. A lot of writers will skip from scene to scene or fast draft, but I can’t do that. I must be happy with the previous chapter or scene before I can move on to the next one. It means that I am slow at drafting, but I also have less revising to do at the end.
What are your writing goals for the next year?
Finish drafting my current novel, sell it, and start writing the next shiny idea. I have so many to choose from!

Some Get to know me Questions
What’s the best vacation you ever had?
I’ve traveled a lot, so that’s a tough one. Our honeymoon in Barcelona was pretty awesome, but being proposed to on the beach at Disney World and then running off to the Florida courthouse two days later to get married is the most memorable.
What’s your favourite rainy day movie?
I’m not sure I have one. I guess it depends of my mood. I’m always up for watching Star Wars, any of the X-Men movies, The Wedding Singer, Beauty and the Beast, or the BBC mini-series of Pride and Prejudice. My current favorite ‘put on in the background while I do other stuff’ movie is Guardians of the Galaxy though. I also like to watch The Parent Trap (The original with Hailey Milles) when I’m sick sometimes because it reminds me of my mom. We would watch it together a lot when I was little.
If you could have personally witnessed one event in history, what would it be?
I love history, so this is a hard one for me. If I had to choose, I guess I would want to travel back to Hadrian’s wall (the border between England and Scotland) around the year 200AD and see what the skirmishes between the Romans and the Picts were really like. Not a lot is known about the Pics and my current novel is inspired by a tribal race similar to them.
Where’s your favourite place to read?
My favorite places to read are on the porch of my grandparent’s lake house or by a pool or the ocean. Too bad I’m rarely near one of those places. At home, my favorite place to read is in bed an hour or so before I go to sleep or in my leather chair in my office.
If you had a million dollars, what would be the first thing you would buy?
Tickets to travel around the world.
Heather L. Reid is both American and British and has called six different cities in three different countries, home. Her strong sense of wanderlust and craving for a new adventure mean you might find her wandering the moors of her beloved Scotland, exploring haunted castles, or hiking through a magical forest in search of fairies and sprites. When she’s not venturing into the unknown in her real life, she loves getting lost in the worlds of video games or curling up by the fire with good story. For now, this native Texan is back in the Lone Star State, settling down with her Scottish husband and writing new tales of fantasy and horror.
