Author : Kate Avery Ellison
Publication date : February 2014
Genres : Fantasy, Young Adult

Synopsis:

All her life, clever Aemi has been a slave in the Village of the Rocks, a place where the sea and sky meet. She’s heard the stories about the fabled People of the Sea, a people who possess unimaginable technology who live below the waves in the dark, secret places of the ocean. But she never dreamed those stories were true.

When a ship emerges from the ocean and men burn her village, Aemi is captured, and enslaved below the waves in Itlantis, a world filled with ancient cities of glass and metal, floating gardens, and wondrous devices that seem to work magic. To make matters worse, her village nemesis, the stuck-up mayor’s son Nol, was captured with her, and they are made servants in the same household beneath the sea.

Desperate to be free, Aemi plots her escape, even going so far as to work with Nol. But the sea holds more secrets than she realizes, and escape might not be as simple as leaving…

Excerpt!
The sea sang to itself in the music of blue water and salt and gulls’ cries as I sat above it, crouched atop the column-like Looking Rock with a spear clenched in my hand and words of frustration crawling on my tongue. The water below lapped at the edges of the rock, foaming over the pebbled shore that ringed the rock, and the foam hid the fish I was trying to catch. I bent over the water and stabbed the spear into the foaming waves. When I withdrew it from the pool, a fish wriggled on the end, and I smiled with a quick jerk of my lips. I had always been good with a spear, somewhat inexplicably according to Nealla. I tossed the fish into my sack and moved to the other side of the Looking Rock, where the tide pools were often filled with exotic things washed in from the sea. It was a secret place, and few knew to look here. I came often whenever I had a moment of freedom from my duties, for if I could catch enough things of value, I could sell them in the marketplace and add coin to the stash I kept hidden away, the stash that would one day buy my freedom. The first tide pools were disappointingly empty except for a few anemone and starfish clinging to the sides of the rocks, and a yellow fish darting away from my face as I peered down. I moved on. Three more pools, empty. But luck had not abandoned me. At the final pool I stopped, transfixed by the creature I saw beneath the surface. It was eerie and beautiful, with fluttering fins along its throat and back and tail, speckled blue scales, and a mouth full of teeth. It wasn’t a fish or a dolphin or a snake, but something that looked like bits of all three. I had never seen such a creature. It was some monster from the depths, but a small one. I bent over the rock, sliding my belly forward by inches, peering into the deep glassy green of the pool beneath where the creature swam in small circles, imprisoned until high tide. I didn’t want to use a spear on such a magnificent creature. For this, I needed a net. I stabbed my spear into the edge of the pool, marking the fish-creature as mine. Then I scrambled to the edge of the Looking Rock. The wind swirled around me, wetting me with a mist of sea spray as I brought my arms forward and dove into the sea below. Bubbles exploded around me as I swam through the green-blue water. Below, fish wove between a jewel-colored spread of coral. A dark line at the edge of my vision signaled where the shallow waters ended and the deep water began. No one ever went out into deep water. I reached the larger rocks that rose from the water like the spearheads of giants and hauled myself onto a sea-carved shelf of white stone. My master’s house was before me, a collection of caves and hollows in the rock. It was a nice house, with a strip of pebbled beach facing west. Beyond the beach, a shallow place for bathing and washing was surrounded by thin white stones that protruded from the water like fingers and broke the force of the waves. A hole in the rock wall led to the interior. Strings of shells formed a curtain barrier, and they tinkled and clicked in the wind. I shoved them aside and stepped into the cool stone passage leading to the house. I needed one of my master’s nets. Just to borrow, to catch that fish. The master’s father sat on a mat beside the fire, muttering to himself. Beside him were nets, the small ones used for hand fishing. He was mending them, his wrinkled hands moving swiftly as he worked over a hole. “Hello, Old One,” I said, speaking carefully and respectfully. “I need to borrow a net.” He lifted his head and scrutinized me. I was dripping from the sea. My hair stuck to my neck and forehead. Droplets fell from my fingers. He reached for one of the nets and lifted it toward me, but pulled it back before I could take it. “Don’t go in the deep places,” he said, and his voice creaked. “The Sea People are in the deep places.” “Yes, Old One,” I said, leaning forward to reach the net. The master’s father was crazy, but gentle. Sometimes he liked to ramble about fables from his youth, and sometimes I listened, because none of the others did, and I felt sorry for him. I didn’t have time for it today. “I saw one of their ships the other night,” he continued, pulling the net farther away and out of reach again. “Came up from the depths, black as a wet stone, bright with lights. They’re watching us.” “Don’t worry, Old One,” I said. “We’ll keep you safe.” He harrumphed as if doubtful and handed me the net. “Stay out of the deep places,” he said again. I snatched the net and hurried outside once more. The wind fanned my face. I stopped at the edge of the water and shaded my eyes against the glaring sun. Someone else was on the Looking Rock. I saw a figure moving around the pool. Confound that Old One and his stories! I splashed into the water, my heart pounding as I swam hard, kicking my legs. I reached the rock and hauled myself up, hair dripping, leaving wet footprints as I ran to the tide pools. A young man stood at the edge of the pool, his feet hanging in the water, his arms braced behind him and his face tipped toward the sun. He was lounging, waiting for me, stretched out as if to show off his physical perfections and the gold bracelets on his arms and ankles. That handsome, arrogant face, smirking mouth, and long, dark lashes that contrasted with his pale, wavy hair—I’d know him anywhere. Nol. I looked past him into the water and stopped in horror. The creature was gone. My bag of sad little fish lay at the edge of the rock, looking deflated in the sunlight. My spear lay beside it. Fury built up at the back of my neck and swept through my throat to take hold of my tongue. Anger licked at my bones. “You stole my catch.” Nol opened one eye and looked at me. “What are you talking about? Your bag of fish is right there. I didn’t touch it.” “No. The creature in the pool—it was my catch. I found it first, as was clearly demonstrated by my spear marking the pool. You took it! Where did you put it?” I was furious, devastated. Nol straightened and blinked at me. His smile was slow and smooth, like butter being spread across bread. “It wasn’t your fish,” he said. “It wasn’t in your net, so you had no claim.” “I marked it with my spear—” “You aren’t a fisherman, thrall-girl. The rules of the village don’t apply to the likes of you. You have no identifying marker that deserves to be honored, and that thing you call a spear is simply a piece of garbage with a point at one end. It could have washed into the pool on its own, for all I know.” I wanted to strangle him. My anger was hot and fierce, and it made my legs tremble. But he was the mayor’s second son, and he could do as he liked. Instead, I bit my tongue and turned away. I’d lost this round, but I would not lose to Nol again.

I live in Georgia with my wonderful husband and two spoiled cats. When I'm not writing, I'm usually catching up on my extensive Netflix queue, reading a book, giggling at something funny online, or trying to convince my husband to give me just ONE bite of whatever he's eating.

Interview!

Describe Of Sea and Stone in six words.
Atlantis, steampunk, sunlight, seawater, secrets, romance.

What books have you read and loved lately?

I am almost finished with Finnikin of the Rock by Melina Marchetta, and it’s an absolute delight. Witty, immersive, and utterly compelling fantasy that reminds me very much of my beloved Megan Whalen Turner books.

Who has been the most supportive person in your writing career?
My husband. About two years into trying to get published, I was ready to give up on my stories and get a job doing something tremendously ill-suited for me, like being a secretary (I am a very bad secretary. Very disorganized). He convinced me to give it more time, and he is probably the sole reason I am published today. He is my first reader, my strongest encourager, and my most reliable critic.

Are you working on anything else currently?
Yes! I’m currently hard at work on the second book in the Secrets of Itlantis series, and I’m also working on a few secret projects on the side—one is a more traditional fantasy, another is a post-apocalyptic novel. I hope to have more details about them for my readers very soon.

Fifteen-year-old Siena is a Youngling, soon to be a Bearer, when she starts hearing rumors of another tribe of all women, called the Wild Ones. They are known to kidnap Youngling girls before the Call, the ceremony in which Bearers are given a husband with whom to bear children with.

As the desert sands run out on her life's hourglass, Siena must uncover the truth about the Wild Ones while untangling the web of lies and deceit her father has masterfully spun.

Stalkers by Various Authors Book Blitz and Giveaway!

Stalkers by Various Authors
Release date: November 26th 2013
Publisher: Indie Style Press
Purchase: Amazon

Synopsis via Goodreads:

Shadows follow you in the darkness of the night and the eerie sensation of being watched crawls up your spine. Your sanity pulls apart at the seams as the terrors stalk their victims, leaving you too frightened to turn off the light.

These twisted stories will leave you breathless, dreading the horrors lurking around the corner.

Seventeen authors. Seventeen tales of terror. Infinite nightmares.

Foreword

This started out as a contest but grew into an idea. This is the third anthology that was created out of a contest on my Facebook page. The authors and readers were given the opportunity to write a short story using the guidelines provided. This go round I received over thirty entries. Only seventeen were chosen, but every story deserves a moment of recognition. I want to thank everybody for their time and their wonderful imaginations. The seventeen chosen are what you will find in this anthology, a collection of short stories that left me in awe at the talent of these amazing authors. These stories come from already published authors as well as readers who aspired to write.
The guidelines used to write these short stories were ones that I thought would appeal to the audience. This left a collection of shorts that will take you all over the paranormal genre.

* This anthology will have a main theme of Stalkers. That is about where my direction stops. It does not have to be paranormal, though it can be. The story can be a psychological thriller, horror, paranormal, suspense, action… whatever you want it to be. You can have a demon stalking someone in their dreams or a serial killer stalking prey, just to give you a couple examples. Whatever your twisted minds can come up with. I want stories that have you looking in the backseat of your car before you get in—stories that make the little hairs on the back of your neck stand up when you think someone looked at you just a little too long. Let your imaginations flow free and DELVE into the DARKER side of your mind… You know you want to.*

I believe that the authors of these short stories more than met the guidelines; they exceeded even my expectations. I hope that you enjoy reading these as much as I did. Please leave a review when you are finished on Amazon or Goodreads and let us know what you think. Also, please take the opportunity to connect with these amazing authors. Author links are included on the individual title pages of the stories.
Enjoy your read!

For this Blitz Im featuring author Elizabeth Collins book from Stalkers called Autumn. Read on for an excerpt and Guest post from the lovely author.

Blurb:

Autumn knows exactly what she wants, and she'll do whatever it takes to get it. Melanie knows Autumn wants her husband, but has no idea how far she'll go to get him.

Excerpt :

Glass from the busted security light lies scattered among clumps of rotting leaves and trash where I sit and wait. I pinch up a tiny shard and pick at the chipped, green paint on the dumpster in front of me. Little sounds trickle down from two stories up, dampening my mood. Picturing me up there instead of her helps, but not much.
My ass is freezing, and I’m bored as hell. They can’t possibly go on much longer.
“Melanie,” he says, dragging out her name in a deep rumble.
Ah. Just a few more minutes, and I’ll get what I came for.
The shard hits a groove and stops but my hand keeps going, the smooth edge of the glass slicing the pad of my finger.
“Shit.”
I flick it away and rise from the ground, examining my finger. Dark liquid oozes from the shallow cut creating a small bubble of blood. I lift it to my mouth before the blood can spill, slide it across my bottom lip, and then slip it into my mouth. Sucking lightly at the wound, I glide it along my tongue and close my eyes as a low moan vibrates the back of my throat. Yearning knots my stomach.
It’s time.
The fire escape zigzags its way up the side of the building. I check the mouth of the alley one more time, but no one should be able to see me even if they’re looking. I’m shrouded in complete darkness without the moon’s beam acting as an unwelcome spotlight. I tug at my black knit cap anyway—who knew platinum blonde practically glows in the moonlight? It gave me away the first time I came here, so after that, donning the hat became habit. At least the short locks are easy to conceal, a plus side to the hack job I’d done in a mindless rage after the office party last month.
The streams of people filtering by always have the same reaction—maybe they can sense me here. I can hear the shuffle in their step as they clutch their bags tighter and throw a quick glance into the darkness. A trickle of fear will wiggle down their spine before they’re safe again, bounding off to their fancy apartments to hug their two-point-five kids and make love to their husbands or wives.
But I’m not here for them.
I’m here for the tramp upstairs, the one who thinks she’s so special having him inside her, calling her name. But tonight is a new moon.
New moon—a name full of bright promises like the ones he made her, but it covers me like a midnight blanket as I start my climb.
There’s only one more set of steps to go as my hand starts trembling against the cold steel of the railing. I pause to take a breath and close my eyes, but then I can feel his breath heat my neck and greedy fingers caress my thigh. His sweat mingles with mine, staining pristine white sheets. My name falls into the alley as the orgasm I’ve caused pulses through him.
My chest swells with deep, slow breaths and the chilled November air assaults my senses, jolting me back into reality. It felt so real, and it’s so close.
Just focus, Autumn. There will be time for fantasies later. Not that I’ll need them.
After tonight, Chad McKenna will be mine.

My Five Favorite Books

I loved to read as a child, but at some point other things phased it out. I still read through the years, but not much, and definitely nothing worth noting. So, while I am trying to catch up, I'm very far behind most of my writer friends, especially when it comes to the classics I feel should be on this list. They're on every writers list, right? Well, not mine. Not because they aren't amazing books, I probably just haven't read them yet. There is something else too: I change my mind constantly. I don't have permanent favorites of anything.

So, instead of my five favorite books ever, I'm going to list my five favorite books right now. And because I have a couple favorite authors that could fill up this list with only their books I'm going to limit myself to one book per author.
(Each * stand for how many book there are in the series)

1. Twilight**** by Stephenie Meyer- I'm going to admit it. Twilight got me reading again, but I was way late to the party. I knew nothing about Twilight until 2009. The movie came out and I vaguely remembered seeing a few things about the books over the years and thinking ‘hey, I should read that sometime,’ and then forgetting about it. So, the February after the movie came out, two days before my birthday, I was in the grocery store and the paperback was sitting there on a rack on sale for like $4 and I figured why not? That night I read the whole thing, and the next day I went and got the next three and read one a day until I was done. Then re-read them, and re-read them... I was hooked.
Since I've been writing--I started writing seriously in January of 2013. (Wow... it feels like it's been so much longer than a year)--I've studied the craft in depth and I can now see all the technical faults in Twilight, but I don't care, I still love it.

2. Harry Potter******** by J.K. Rowling - I was late to this party too. I'm late to pretty much all of them. Scratch that, I'm not only late, but by the time I get there everyone has gone home except for the guy who's passed out on the lawn.
Like most, I couldn't put these down. Do I really need to explain why?
Here is where we get to authors you may not have heard of before. In my world they are rock stars, so it's hard to imagine when someone doesn't know who they are. But, if you don't I'm proud to introduce them to you. Like I said, I'll choose one book per author, but every book they each have out is gold.

3. Here** (On the Otherside) by Denise Grover Swank: This was the hardest one to choose. Denise is my literary hero and I can't choose my favorite of her books, I never have been able to decide, but today I'll go with Here
Julia is awesome and I love the way she matures and grows throughout the series, but it's Reese that I really fell in love with. Even though it's supposed to be Evan, I was always team Reese...always ::swoon::
Anyway, this is one of those books where giving details means spoilers, and I'm not very good at this anyway. So please, check out the blurb and reviews. You won't be sorry.

4. Whispers in Autumn**** (The Last Year) by Trisha Leigh AKA Lyla Payne (trust me, if you check out this series and love her writing as much as I do you'll want to check out her NA series penned as Lyla):
Trisha has a way of putting words together that astonishes me. Her descriptions are rich and vivid without bogging down the story. The characters are so real and deep sometimes I forget they don't exist. You will be completely emerged in her books unable to come up for air until the ride is over.

5. Wander Dust*** by Michelle Warren:
Seraphina Parrish is one kick-ass heroine. She's smart, she's strong, she's stubborn, and she has a very hard time following the rules. There is so much that happens in these books and it's all amazing. The world Michelle creates is vivid and she makes you want to live there even though in reality living there and loving it means you're-- nope... spoiler, sorry. If you're a human, with feelings, you will have lots of them and it will do twisty things to your heart.... but in the end...one word: perfection.

When Noah catches an earth bound demon in his form stealing a soul, he is sent back to Heaven to plead his case. But no one believes him. He is banished from heaven for a crime he didn’t commit, given one year on earth to find the demon responsible for his framing. If he fails to do so, he will be dragged to hell for eternity.
On his first day on earth he meets publishing assistant Fern Holliday who helps him get back on his feet. She is reluctant in getting close to him, but agrees to help Noah find the demon. By following the signs Michael sends him, Noah and Fern travel the world in search of the demon. They grow closer every day until Fern is struck down by a mystery illness. Noah is at loss at what to do as her condition worsens. Before the year is up and he returns to heaven empty handed the demon appears agreeing to be taken back, only if Noah takes Fern’s soul to Lucifer. Will he follow the strict rules of heaven or succumb to his heart? Meanwhile Lucifer’s army is growing stronger.

EXCERPT

Noah entered the hospital foyer and shivered, his wet woollen coat dripping water onto the laminate floor. Around him people moaned, writhing in pain or comforted loved ones. He always hated coming to hospitals, the trip often leaving a bitter taste in his mouth.
A young nurse engrossed in her paperwork passed him unaware of his stained clothes, wet from the rain. He must have stunk, having spent most of the night shivering in an alleyway, gaining the courage to come inside the building. He gazed at the nurses behind the reception desk taking calls and admitting new patients. They wouldn’t notice if he snuck down the hall to Room 205.
He inadvertently lifted a hand to caress his left shoulder, branded with a handprint of an archangel. It stung tonight meaning his next soul was nearby. He remembered the night he’d gotten the brand, lying on his bathroom tiles dying of a heroin overdose in 1965. He didn’t see who’d grabbed him from near death but he did remember their grip on his shoulder, their fingers boiling his skin like plastic. His soul, ripped from his body, pulled through the ceiling and into the stars. He woke up days later, hovering over a dead body. He didn’t recognise them, or how they died but somehow he knew what to do. He rested his hand upon their shoulder and was temporarily impaired by a bright light. It was gone as quickly as it came, leaving behind a feeling of euphoria. Whatever he had done felt right. A baby’s cry snapped Noah back to reality, back to the dripping coat and the chill in his bones. The smell of the hospital nauseated him. He tapped his notepad against his chest and remembered the job he had to do. He wandered down the hall passing the dead or dying in their hospital beds. They were not his tonight.
When he approached Room 205, he fished in his pocket and withdrew his leather-bound notepad. Embossed in gold was the name of his next soul. Damien Jacobs. According to Noah’s Intel from Heaven, the man had terminal cancer, dead for at least an hour. But his soul was still affixed to the hospital, not ready to leave Earth.
Noah pressed a hand against the door and searched the halls. A nurse ducked into a room nearby, a patient hung by the cafeteria. No one paid him any attention, so he turned invisible, sucking energy from the objects around him. Reaping souls took stamina and energy, draining him quickly. He had a short window of time before he materialised again.
Noah stepped into the room and paused to listen to the sound of weeping. Damien lay dead in his bed, tubes still attached to his lifeless body. After all these years as an angel, he could never forget the colour of the human skin once a soul left the body. The fragile area around Damien’s eyes appeared transparent and elastic. His family sat around him, hunched over, each gripping onto a piece of his blanket, desperate to capture his soul before it left his body. Noah saw movement in the corner of his eye. Damien stood beside him in a white hospital robe, his face blank and deadpan. “Am I dead?”
Noah froze, knowing his answer could change Damien’s fragile frame of mind. When a soul is fresh from the body, there was no telling whether they would be agitated or bitter about their death. It all came down to the first interaction. An angel must treat them as though they were still alive, human.
He took a steady step towards Damien, his hand out stretched. “I am afraid it is true. But you must come with me now,” he said gently.

About the Author:

After her first heartbreak, Tori found solace in two things: reading romance novels and listening to an after-dark radio program called Lovers and Other Strangers. Throughout the summer and fall of 1990, the new kid in town found reading fiction and writing her own short stories gave her a much needed creative outlet. Determined to become a published author, Tori amassed stacks of notebooks and boxes of filed-away stories, most only half-finished before another idea would overtake her and demand to be written down. Then, while on parental leave with her second baby, one story formed and refused to be packed away. Between teaching full-time, parenting, and life in general, it would take almost seven years before the first novel in her first trilogy would be completed. In the process, Tori finally found her stride as a writer.

At present, on her off-time, Tori not only enjoys reading, but also listening to an eclectic mix of music as she walks the family dog (Skittles), attempts to turn her thumb green, or makes needlework gifts for her friends and family members. She loves to travel, collect and make miniature furniture, and a good cup of tea during a thunderstorm or a blizzard. Under it all, she is always intrigued by history, the supernatural, vampire and shapeshifter mythology, romance, and other dangers.

Tori is currently working on Crystal and Wand: Book Three of The Talbot Trilogy. She lives in Kirkland Lake, Ontario, Canada with her husband and two children. She is a full-time teacher at a local high school.

When Ileni lost her magic, she lost everything: her place in society, her purpose in life, and the man she had expected to spend her life with. So when the Elders sent her to be magic tutor to a secret sect of assassins, she went willingly, even though the last two tutors had died under mysterious circumstances.

But beneath the assassins’ caves, Ileni will discover a new place and a new purpose… and a new and dangerous love. She will struggle to keep her lost magic a secret while teaching it to her deadly students, and to find out what happened to the two tutors who preceded her. But what she discovers will change not only her future, but the future of her people, the assassins… and possibly the entire world.

My Thoughts :

Ileni had everything, a life most envy, but now its taken a turn for the worst. She is losing her magic a little every time she uses it and she also lost the man she loved. Magic users and non magic users don't mingle so when she is offered a chance to go "teach" the assassins magic, she takes it. She knows she was only offered it because she is now expendable.

The assassins follow the law of The Master to the letter! His word is law. When Ileni goes to the caves its with one mission in mind, to find out who killed the last two teachers. She has no idea what she is in for!!

Ok, I finished this a few days ago and cant stop thinking about it. It was amazing!

Ileni is a strong willed character. She has relied heavily on her magic and when she realises that she is losing it she doesn't have much choice but to accept the Elders offer. She goes to the caves with determination and dignity. She is in danger every day but never falters and always keeps a strong outer face. She is truly a heroine that you can look up to and I loved her character.

Sorin was so mysterious! He is assigned to watch and protect Ileni but slowly starts to fall for her. He is the epitome of the strong silent type and is a deadly assassin. He is unfailing in his faith of The Master. If his Master ordered him to kill he would do it in the blink of an eye and without a thought.

I loved watching the romance between Ileni and Sorin blossom. It was so subtle and slow building but so sweet. The chemistry was there straight away but both had trouble trusting the other at the start. It was nice to see it develop normally and not be one of the plethora of insta love stories.

Now on to The Master!! He was for me the best villain I've read in a while. He was down right scary!! He is like the leader of a cult and has brainwashed the assassins to never question or doubt him. He is all knowing!! He shows his power to Ileni the day she comes to the caves. He orders one of the assassins to jump out the window and the assassin does it with no hesitation and a willingness that is creepy. He portrays himself as the good guy but is he really?

Overall Deathsworn was magnificent. The author has created a dark and deadly world of assassins and magic that pulls you in. This book hooked me from the start and I loved every word of it. Leah Cypess weaved a deadly tale with characters you immediately love. Her world building and ability to make you feel the atmosphere of that world was amazing. Its a story filled with secrets, lies, intrigue and mystery and will leave your mind blown with how intricate the plot is.

I could ramble all day about how good this is and how much I recommend it but all I'm going to say is Read This Book Now!!! You wont be sorry.
