The Bastion was humanity’s last hope against the fearsome undead creatures known as the Inferi Scourge. A fortified city with a high wall, surrounded by lush land rich with all the resources needed to survive, protected by high mountain summits, and a massive gate to secure the only pass into the valley, the Bastion became the last stronghold of the living on earth. But one fateful day, the gate failed and the Inferi Scourge destroyed the human settlements outside the walls and trapped the survivors inside the city. Now decades later, the last remaining humans are struggling to survive in a dying city as resources and hope dwindle.

Vanguard Maria Martinez has lived her whole life within the towering walls of steel. She yearns for a life away from the overcrowded streets, rolling blackouts, and food shortages, but there is no hope for anyone as long as the Inferi Scourge howl outside the high walls. Her only refuge from the daily grind is in the arms of her lover, Dwayne Reichardt, an officer in the Bastion Constabulary. Both are highly-decorated veterans of the last disastrous push against the Inferi Scourge. Their secret affair is her only happiness.

Then one day Maria is summoned to meet with a mysterious representative from the Science Warfare Division and is offered the opportunity to finally destroy the Inferi Scourge in the valley and close the gate. The rewards of success are great, but she will have to sacrifice everything, possibly even her life, to accomplish the ultimate goal of securing the future of humanity and saving it from extinction.

My Thoughts :

The Blurb pretty much says it all so I'm not going to rehash it. When I requested this I had an idea of what it was about and what I was expecting from it. Well this totally exceeded my expectations. It was way better than I thought.

Maria is one heck of a heroine. She is smart, loyal, fierce and totally kick ass. Yet she is physically scared and mentally tired. She longs for freedom. I absolutely loved her character. She was a major part of the last great purge of Inferi that failed but was injured. During recuperation she got to know Dwayne, who was her superior during the battle. Both of them found themselves falling for each other. They had to keep their relationship a secret though because they work together. When Maria is called to duty and told that there is a way for her to walk and kill the Inferi without detection and that she is the only hope for humanity , she jumps at the chance to help. What happens next changes her life forever.

Dwayne, even though he is much older than Maria, is her rock. Both of them compliment each other and are perfect together. I loved their relationship. He is strong, loyal, tough but also such a sweetheart. He loves Maria totally and will do anything in his power to help her and keep her safe. When she is sent to the very heart of the lions den he does all he can to help even though she has change. His love for her was strong and true.

The idea of the book was thrilling. Some people lived outside the Bastion but when the gate failed they were either killed or forced to retreat behind the wall. Now they are living with hundreds of thousands Inferi howling for their blood. With resources diminishing they will try anything to wipe out the Scourge and reclaim the valley but will the cost be too high? Are the people in power really out to help the public? Who can Maria trust?

From the get go this book was gripping. You are dropped straight into the action. It was an action packed, suspenseful,  breathtaking, thrilling, edge of your seat, rollercoaster of a ride!! The story throws so many twists and shocks your way you never know whats going to happen. The authors style of writing draws you into the story. She paints such vivid details. She doesn't just tells a story, she makes you live the story!! From the unique storyline to the complex characters, you will fall in love with this bleak and desolate world.  Id highly recommend.

Root Bound by Tanya Karen Gough Blog Tour, Review and Giveaway!

Welcome to my stop on the tour for Root Bound (Emma and the Elementals Volume 1) by Tanya Karen Gough.  Root Bound is an upper Middle Grade fantasy adventure recommended for ages 10+. The tour is to run February 3-14 with reviews only.  Be sure to check out all the details and the tour schedule on the tour page.

 About the Book:

Root Bound is a fast-paced, action fantasy novel about a  young girl finding her place in
the world through a series of adventures involving magical  creatures, and a journey to the centre of
the earth. Root Bound is both a topsy-turvy riff on traditional  literary children's fantasy and an
 allegorical coming-of-age tale.
Emma and her father, a jazz musician, are always on the  move, travelling from place to place as her father’s work  demands. Their new home, however, is different. There’s a  frightening woman who lives down the hall: she bears an  uncanny resemblance to a witch. A mysterious light comes    from her apartment, and a small boy seems to be trapped  inside.
School in this town is no happy place either, with an odd principal and a gang of girls who make tormenting Emma their special project. And strangest of all is the fact that there seem to be brownies - basement brownies, in the air vent in her bedroom. They are searching for the Wanderer, a powerful being who can help free the Crown Prince of Under from the black magic prison that holds him. Emma travels through the brownie burrow to the valley of Hades to visit with the goddess Ceres, following a series of clues that lead her across the sea of memory to the centre of the world. There, on an inhospitable rock floating in a sea of steaming lava, Emma must find a way to free the prince, release her mother from the sea of memory, and restore magic to both the brownie burrow and the human world above.

 Goodreads |  Smashwords  |  Amazon  |  B&N  |  Kobo  | Lulu (trade paper)

My Thoughts :

Emma and her dad move around a lot. He is a musician and has to go where the jobs are. When she pulls up to their current house she thinks it looks an awful lot like a face. Its almost like its alive, but that isn't possible?? She thinks its tiredness and forgets all about it. On the way up to their apartment they meet an old lady. Emma takes an immediate disliking to her and vows to avoid her.

In bed one night Emma hears strange noises coming from the vent. She thinks she can hear voices but they sound very small and far away. Next thing she knows, shes looking at some small people. The Brownies live in Under (Underneath the house). Humans aren't supposed to be able to see them so why can Emma? The Brownies explain to Emma that the house is alive with the magic from Under but there's an evil witch who is destroying all the houses and thus destroying Under. They are looking for The Wanderer to help stop the Witch and save under.

I was pleasantly surprised with this book. When I read the synopsis I knew I had to read it with my boys. They love fantasy and this sounded good.

I felt for Emma, her father is always working and she is lonely. She hates always being the new girl and tries to fly under the radar. At the school this time she gets picked on by the "popular" kids. When the Brownies come, at first she thinks its a dream but when she sees them again she has to face the fact they are real.

The Brownies were very witty and funny. There were a lot of laugh out loud moments with the Brownies and I thoroughly enjoyed them!! My boys thought they were the best part of the book :)

Overall Root Bound is a fun book. Its quite slow to start but once Emma meets the Brownies the story starts speeding up and gets much better. There's magic, mayhem and Mythology all mixed up into one awesome read.

Houses Of Common by Derick William Dalton Blog Tour and Excerpt!

About HOUSES OF COMMON:

In the 22nd
century, pilgrims leave Earth for the nearby
planets that terraformers have crafted to meet
their needs. Ranyk is a smart-mouthed alien, the best of the world-builders employed by the US
government--and he always completes his risky
assignments solo, pushing to the deep recesses of
space for the good of colonists and to avoid his
growing fame.
Until he's handed an on-planet assignment in
Ireland, of all places, as an undercover
international student of aquaponics. His real
plan? To pull scientists and their families out of a
country careening toward civil war--and off earth
to a world of their own before marital-law
lockdown ends their ground-breaking
discoveries.
Risking his life is no novelty for Ranyk. He's
been battered by asteroids, nearly incinerated in
volcanoes, and has out-piloted pirates. But political espionage on Earth is more
dangerous that anything he's encountered before, and he's completely ill-equipped for
such delicate matters. Now he must figure out who to trust and who to eliminate, or it
will mean his freedom, the safety of forty thousand desperate colonists, and the lives of
his friends.

“I'll use smaller words so you can keep up,” Ranyk said. “This is a terraform ship, and I'm only here to scout this planet. No cargo, no wealthy passengers. No chop-shop ready ship, either. My fusion reactor's older than your mother, my gravcoils get around more than your girlfriend.”
Ranyk was answered only by the attacking ship’s gunner.
“Bullets are how you thank me for inside information? I'm just trying to save you some trouble. You have to catch me, board my ship, and when you get over here and find out my lab equipment has no resale value and all I have are vats of engineered photosynthetic bacteria, you'll be really angry and try to kill me. I can't even give you good booze or do a stand-up routine. Sure, you'll have a ship, but like I said, it's not at all new.”
More flashes of hot bullets plowed through Ranyk’s shielding to plink off the hull of his ship.
“Are you sore because your spaceship's an old junk heap and mine's just old? Here's where I get off the patience train.”
Coming about, Ranyk nosed his ship down, aiming just below the enemy. Beneath them, Ranyk stood his ship on its nose, pointed his reactor chamber at the underside of their cockpit, and sparked a detonation.
Rocketing away, Ranyk watched the shimmering globe of helium-4 and protons swell to enormity behind him. “No weapons over here and I still win. You humans and your guns are the epitome of stupidity.”
Sounding nonchalant, Ranyk felt the queasiness of guilt. Unlike fear, this emotion he knew.
Distracted, he didn't notice the flash on his receiver, would never notice the most devastating message of his life.

Excerpt:

Another night. Another soul.

Chugging back the last of my ale, I scanned the sordid tavern for my next victim. Or maybe I should call them my prey, since I was the hunter. A taker of souls. A destroyer of innocents. For the millionth time in my long existence, I cursed my demon father.

“That’s no way to speak to a lady.”

Through my hazy stupor and incessant self-loathing, I managed to turn my head toward the woman now standing next to me. Her blazing red hair and dark black eyes locked onto my gaze with a ferocity matched only by my own. Something dangerous, yet familiar trickled off her like an electrical charge ready to ignite. Had I not had so much to drink, she would have scorched me with one look.

She leaned in close enough to rub her ample breasts against my shoulder. I couldn’t help but stare. “You might want to tone down the eyes,” she said and then winked. “You’re going to scare them away before you have a chance to pounce.”

My heart beat faster than I thought capable after crippling it with homemade ale and my dead soul. I tried to form some words, tried to say something to this woman who spoke about things she shouldn’t know.

“How long?” She asked just before lifting her knee and kicking away a potential suitor. Without missing a beat, she grabbed my clay mug off the wooden bar and slammed it into the man’s face when he came back in retaliation.  The noise in the tavern stopped for the briefest of moments before the fiddles picked up again and everyone cheered. Three men carried the foolish chap from the bar and tossed him out onto the dirt road. No one seemed to notice the remarkable woman who’d taken him down.

Neversink By Barry Wolverton Blog Tour and Giveaway!

Title : Neversink
Author : Barry Wolverton

Synopsis

Barry Wolverton’s masterful middle-grade debut, Neversink, is an epic tale of some very un-epic birds, a fast-paced and funny story of survival, friendship, and fish, in the vein of Watership Down and Kathi Appelt’s The Underneath.

Along the Arctic Circle lies a small island called Neversink, home to a colony of odd-looking seabirds called auks, including one Lockley J. Puffin. With their oceanfront views and plentiful supply of fish, the auks have few concerns—few, save for Lockley’s two best friends, Egbert and Ruby, a know-it-all walrus and a sharp-tongued hummingbird.

But all of this is about to change. Rozbell, the newly crowned king of the Owl Parliament, has long had his scheming eyes on the small colony to the north. Now Neversink’s independence hangs in the balance. An insurgence of owls will inevitably destroy life as the auks know it—unless Lockley can do something about it.

Black Dog by Rachel Neumeier eArc Review!

Title : Black Dog
Author : Rachel Neumeier
Published : February 4th 2014 by Strange Chemistry
Source : Netgalley

BLACK DOG by Rachel Neumeier takes the reader into a hidden world of magic, war, and shapeshifting that exists just behind the headlines of the human world. Think of it as Robin McKinley's SUNSHINE but with werewolves instead of vampires.

Natividad is Pure, one of the rare girls born able to wield magic. Pure magic can protect humans against the supernatural evils they only half-acknowledge--the blood kin or the black dogs. In rare cases--like for Natividad's father and older brother--Pure magic can help black dogs find the strength to control their dark powers.

But before Natividad's mother can finish teaching her magic their enemies find them. Their entire village in the remote hills of Mexico is slaughtered by black dogs. Their parents die protecting them. Natividad and her brothers must flee across a strange country to the only possible shelter: the infamous black dogs of Dimilioc, who have sworn to protect the Pure.

In the snowy forests of Vermont they are discovered by Ezekiel Korte, despite his youth the strongest black dog at Dimilioc and the appointed pack executioner. Intrigued by Natividad he takes them to Dimilioc instead of killing them.

Now they must pass the tests of the Dimilioc Master. Alejandro must prove he can learn loyalty and control even without his sister's Pure magic. Natividad's twin Miguel must prove that an ordinary human can be more than a burden to be protected. And even at Dimilioc a Pure girl like Natividad cannot remain unclaimed to cause fighting and distraction. If she is to stay she must choose a black dog mate.

But, first, they must all survive the looming battle.

My Thoughts :

Im not going to rehash the story because the blurb tells what its about perfectly.

Black Dog is a refreshingly unique take on werewolves. In a genre with so many different types of werewolves its very hard to stand out but this one does. I loved how the author created a world with a difference. Her unique writing style took me on an incredible journey into a world filled with magic and all things supernatural.

I loved how the Black Dogs were people whose dog was always with them as their shadow and all they had to do was wrap the shadow around them to become the Black Dogs. The whole lore and history of them was fascinating.

The characters were complex and well written. Alejandro struggled with his Black Dog and the darker side of life with it but he was also so protective of Natividad and Miguel. He would do anything for them, including heading into the Dimilioc territory. I loved that the book was told from both his and Natividads point of view.

Overall Black Dog was a fascinating read. There's plenty of action and fights, the plot is addicting and it completely caught my attention. While it was slow to get into for me I still ended up really liking it. I will definitely check out more from this author.

Excerpt :

He raises a finger to his lips, loops his arm around mine and then guides me slowly toward the bed.
My pulse quickens in excitement, beating faster and faster with each step closer to those exquisitely comfortable sheets, and then it skips a beat entirely as Terrence whispers into my ear.
"I'd like you to try something a little different tonight," he whispers, and I shiver in delight as his lips brush against my ear.
He sits cross-legged in the middle of the bed, and I climb up and sit beside him, first smoothing out my short black skirt as if trying to retain some modicum of decency and then giving up and sitting on my knees instead. Even though I know he can't see me flashing him, I still feel self-conscious about it for some reason.
"I hope you're not bored of me already," I tease.
Now that I'm sitting on the bed with him, sitting so near to him that I can feel his breath on my skin as he leans in close, my imagination fills with all sorts of delightful ideas and desires. I can think of plenty of things that would be 'different' and I'm intrigued to find out what he's thought up.
He shakes his head and smiles knowingly, and then my breath catches in my throat as he pulls a black satin eye-mask with delicate lace trim from the back pocket of his jeans.
"Put this on, please," he tells me, and he gently presses the blindfold into my hand and closes my fingers around it.
"And then what?" I ask, tugging nervously on mask's elastic band and running my fingers along its soft lace. I don't know what I'd been expecting him to say, but I'm surprised at a blindfold being involved.
"Let me take charge tonight, Irene. Just trust me," Terrence whispers mischievously. He leans in to kiss me but misses my lips and gets me on the cheek instead.
"No whips, chains, handcuffs, anything like that, right?" I ask worriedly as an inkling of panic rises inside me.
"Of course not," he answers, raising an eyebrow incredulously. "Why does everyone think that's sexy these days?"
"I blame Fifty Shades," I joke, and he laughs and shakes his head.
"None of that, I promise. Just trust me, Irene."
I let out a sigh of relief as the tension in my shoulders relaxes. Thank heaven he's not into that sort of thing. I'm sure it's fun for some people, but I'm not touching that stuff with a ten-foot pole.
"Trust you, huh?" I repeat, and he nods silently.
Even though I trust him—I trust him more than anyone since… well, since Isaac, really—I'm still a little nervous. I don't know where he's going with this once the mask goes on, but how far could he go if he's promising not to tie me up?
He could be about to take pictures of me while I'm not expecting it. What wonderful blackmail material that'd be.
No way… he wouldn't do something like that. My doubts have gone so far overboard that even I don't believe them now.
"You don't have to if you're not comfortable," he says, but as he reaches out to reclaim the mask, I yank it away from him and stretch the elastic over the back of my head. The soft black fabric slides down over my eyes and my pulse pounds in my head as darkness engulfs me.
"It's on, Terrence," I say, my voice wavering with a strange blend of excitement or trepidation.

"Thank you," he whispers in my ear, and then he unexpectedly kisses me…

The Magic of Immagica Explained

When we think about magic, we often visualise witches and wizards with wands, casting spells and striking people down with lightening. But the magic within Immagica is very different, and works in a non-traditional, magical way.

The concept of Immagica is based on the power of imagination. Within our imagination, anything is possible. We can create whatever we want, and see it however we like, all inside our own mind. No wand or spell necessary.

The land of Immagica is very organic. It can be shaped and tailored for whoever is there at any given time. There are, of course, certain things that remain the same, but everything else is open to interpretation, and governed by the imagination of the person experiencing the adventure.

Like anything, there are certain rules, but some rules are made to be bent or broken. The magic of Immagica can be unpredictable, because Immagica itself is alive. It actually has a say in everything that is created, and the events that happen. It’s like having someone looking over your shoulder, nudging you in a certain—but not always right—direction. Imagination plays a major part in shaping Immagica, but the subconscious of the person visiting is also at play.

There are two main sections of Immagica. If you have a look at the map

you’ll see there’s the Barren Lands, which encompasses all the not so nice places, and there’s the Go-Between, which is a friendlier place, but not always. In the Barren Lands, the weather changes depending on your mood. Get angry and a thunderstorm can brew in a matter of seconds. In the Go-Between you have more control over things, but your emotions, subconscious and mind are all working either with or against each other.

Although the concept of magic by imagination is a relatively simple one, it can sometimes get confusing in the way it works. This is mainly because nothing is set in stone, and something that happens one way for someone can work in a completely different way for someone else. Read these excerpts where Brynn attempts to explain to Rosaline the way Immagica works, and see if you can make sense of it. I think Rosaline had a hard time grasping the concept.
