Character Interview with “Doc”
INTERVIEWER: “We are greatly honored to have the creator of the city of Impervious with us today, Dr. Benjamin Leiben. Welcome, Doctor Leiben!”
DOC: “Thank you for inviting me. I’m happy to be here. And, please, call me, Doc.” Doc sits into the chair across from me at the interview table. “Do you have any tea?”
INTERVIEWER: “Of course!” I slide a previously brewed cup across the table. “I thought you might enjoy this mango-ginger blend.”
DOC: Doc sips from the cup and nods his head. “Very good.”
INTERVIEWER: “So, word around town is that you personally designed the underground city of Impervious. Can you tell us more about that?”
DOC: Doc laughs. “Well, yes. The idea was actually birthed with my four buddies from college. On a lark of sorts. The idea of building a luxurious self-contained bunker, that is.” Doc pushes his cup away, places his elbow onto the table and rests chin on fists. “You see, we were really just a group of science geeks, enamored with apocalyptic scenarios.”
INTERVIEWER: “So, when did idea turn to action, then?”
DOC: “Oh, when the threat of a true apocalypse began to surface, I suppose. That’s when Marcus sought us out. He was the financier, so to speak.”
INTERVIEWER: “But then things turned?”
DOC: “Well, yes.” Doc stands and begins to pace the interview room.
“Something snapped inside of Marcus. Maybe it was always there.” Doc shakes his head. “I don’t know.”
INTERVIEWER: “But you superseded his desire to control, huh?”
DOC: “Yes, yes. My lovely bride, Ema and myself. We birthed…” Doc laughs at his choice of words, “quite literally, I would say, we birthed a better plan.”
INTERVIEWER: “Retter?” I ask.
DOC: “Retter.” He agrees.
INTERVIEWER: Something in his voice chills me… like I had just stepped onto holy ground. Shaken, I excuse myself and slip out of the room.
I’m a book-writing, selfie-taking, latte-drinking, social media gal. I’m living a good life on the road as a full-fledged Bedouin (Well, except, my tent is actually a fully-equipped RV.) Me and my partner-in-crime (Benj) tend to hunker down wherever the skies are clear and the temps stay in the 70’s. We call ourselves Gypsy Nerds because we aimlessly wander the U.S. with glasses perched upon our noses and faces jammed into computer screens (for the first half the day... The second half of the day is typically devoted to playing because we’re also somewhat immature.)
Like most authors, the characters I create are my extended family. And like most readers, when the story ends, I get a little sad. In real life, I have two handsome, hardworking, grown-up boys who know how to make their Mama proud! *Waves to Joey and Mike!*
The Ascension Series is my debut into the world of YA fiction.
I’m living what I love and loving what I live!
