The Keys of the Watchmen by Kathleen C. Perrin
Katelyn Michaels plans on hating every moment of her visit to Mont Saint Michel with her father’s new French wife. Once there, she is confused when she experiences sensations of déjà vu and hears voices as she and her younger brother explore the medieval village and abbey.
When the oddly-dressed but alluring Nicolas slips Katelyn a strange medallion, she is whisked back through time with him to the 15th century where her Watchmen hosts tell her she is the only hope to save Mont Saint Michel from the invading English armies. Even worse, she learns those armies are led by a fallen angel intent on learning the mount’s closely-guarded secret.
Katelyn is torn by feelings of anger at being taken back in time, inadequacy at finding a modern solution for a medieval problem, and responsibility for the mount’s starving inhabitants. She is also perturbed by her surprising attraction to the ill-tempered Nicolas. Will she stay to learn why she was chosen by the Archangel Michael and find a way to save his mount?

IT WAS NEARLY MIDNIGHT. The tide was coming in, and it was dark moon.
Every man, woman and child on the Mont was in place. They were manning their stations on the ramparts, behind the gates, in the village streets, on the West Terrace. Everyone except Jean. His station was at home, in the bedchamber he now considered to be Katelyn’s. The bedchamber he’d shared with Marie so many years earlier.
His post was at Katelyn’s side. His assignment was to watch over Katelyn and to make the ultimate decision as to her fate. If the fever broke and it looked as if she would recover, then she would remain here to see the completion of the task she had started. At least for a few more days. It could not be much longer than that because even if the fever broke, there was still the matter of her broken ankle. But Jean knew how angry Katelyn would be if she were sent home before the battle she herself had planned was over. And Katelyn’s anger was becoming legendary on the mount.
However, if she hovered on the verge of death, then Jean had a decision to make. He knew that in Katelyn’s world, they could save her from the fever’s grasp. Make her completely whole again. When she had sustained the cuts during her escape from the Godon ship, she’d told him and Nicolas of the poisons that entered the body through broken skin and polluted the blood.
Then she had told them of the miraculous medicines in her time—antibiotics, she had called them—which destroyed the very poisons that were threatening to take away her life at this moment. She’d also spoken of machines, bigger than her magic boxes, which could take pictures inside the human body so that doctors could knit bones back together with metal pins. She’d told them of wondrous things, marvelous things, things of which Jean could only dream.
If only he could see Katelyn’s world, but it was too late now. He’d already made his decision. His body was tired and he wanted to go home to his maker . . . and home to Marie. And Michel. If they would accept him, that is. He thought of Michel, and of the dark truth he had kept buried for so long. The impossible choice he’d been forced to make. It was something he’d not told Katelyn or even Nicolas, because he had seen how the truth had destroyed Marie. How it had taken away her will to fight, her will to live. Her ability to support Jean in his calling.
“We are doomed,” she had said when years after Michel had died, he had finally told her the truth about their beloved son’s demise. “How can we fight against Abdon? He will always be stronger than us. It doesn’t matter who his host is. It will always be the same. I understand that you must be true to your calling, but I cannot do it, Jean. I cannot do it any longer. I will be his next victim, and that will kill you. So what is the point in pretending any longer? I will leave in the morning.”
