Michael Grant, author of the New York Times bestselling Gone series, has created a powerful and brilliant narrative that examines the nature of good and evil in every human.
Mara wakes in a field of dead grass, a heavy mist pressing down on her. She is terrified, afraid that she is dead. Then a beautiful young man dressed in black appears. He calls himself Messenger of Fear.
This boy is able to move effortlessly through space and time. He also sees the darkness in human hearts. He sees the evils done: the destructive lies, the cruelty, the bullying, the violence. And if the world does not bring justice to those who do evil, he will. He offers the wicked a game. If they win, they go free. If they lose, they will live their greatest fear. Either way, their sanity will be challenged.
It is a world of fair but harsh justice. Of retribution and redemption. And mystery. Why was Mara chosen to be the Messenger’s apprentice? What has she done to deserve this terrible fate? She won’t find out until three of the wicked receive justice. And when she does, she will be shattered.
My Thoughts :
Mara has no idea where she is when she wakes. She is in a field with a thick fog baring down on her when a young man appears dressed in black. At first she thinks she is dead but the boy tells her that he is the Messenger Of Fear and she is to take his place as the Messenger.
This boy can travel through space and time like its nothing and has to right the balance of justice. If an evil deed was done he is there to dole out the justice. When Mara sees what is to be done, she is horrified and doesn't know what she did to deserve this fate. She has to learn from Messenger first and right some wrongs before she finds out why she is there!
Ok, first off, Ill pretty much buy anything that Michael Grant writes! He has a phenomenal mind and I adore his books. When I first read the blurb of this it immediately went onto my buy now list and when I was lucky enough to get an ARC, Ill admit that I squeeeed a bit ;) I couldn't wait to dive right into another world this author created and boy what a world!!
We start off by seeing Mara in a field with no recollection of who she is or where she came from. Along comes Messenger and tells her that he is the Messenger Of Fear and she is to take his place. He tells her nothing only that she has to learn on the job then he takes her to Samantha. It seems that Samantha has just died and when Messenger and Mara get there Messenger makes time go backwards so they can learn Samanthas story and make the wrong doers pay. Now for me, Samanthas story was so heartbreaking! Her story unfortunately is true in every day life and its horrifying. Its a powerful story to read though and see the consequences of your actions. That's kind of the moral of the story here. If you knowingly do wrong then you will pay!
I loved the whole idea of this book. Its a story of actions and consequences, of rights and wrongs and the price you will pay. It shows the evil that people do without a second thought and in this day and age we could do with a Messenger Of Fear! Those hateful words you say to the gays, the people you consider "not cool" etc, they have consequences!! This book shows what those consequences are! The fact that Messenger calls to the bullies or the people who cause the wrong doing and makes them pay was another thing that I loved. Even though he is there to give them their justice, he still gives them a choice and a chance to walk away free.
The mythology and lore of Messenger Of fear was fascinating. Messenger was my favourite character and I hope we get to find out his story in a future book. Even with the evil he sees and what he has to do, he is still compassionate and kind. We see other characters but never find out what they do for sure and we are left with a LOT of questions but I think it adds to the mystery of the book and it makes me want to pick up the next one ASAP.
So ya, overall I loved this! It was such a different and unique book and one that will stay with you long after you finish it. There are important lessons to be learned from this story and lets hope people take heed or the Messenger may call!
